Quick Links:
Leon starts Resident Evil 4 Remake with a relatively small health bar, making survival more challenging during the opening chapters. Fortunately, there are several ways to improve his durability as you progress through the game.
However, not every survival item works in the same way. Some permanently increase Leon’s maximum health, while others simply reduce the damage he receives. Understanding the difference helps you make better decisions about healing items, treasures and equipment throughout your playthrough.
How Do You Increase Maximum Health?
Leon can permanently increase his maximum health in two ways:
- Consuming Yellow Herb mixtures.
- Consuming Rhinoceros Beetles.
Both methods permanently extend Leon’s health bar for the rest of your save file. As a result, Leon can survive more enemy attacks before needing to heal, making later chapters and higher difficulty levels more manageable.
Items such as Body Armour and the Chicken Hat improve survivability in different ways, but they do not permanently increase Leon’s maximum health.
Use Yellow Herbs

Yellow Herbs are the primary way to increase Leon’s maximum health.
Unlike Green Herbs, Yellow Herbs cannot be used on their own. Instead, they must be combined with either a Green Herb or a Red Herb before they can be consumed. Regardless of which combination you choose, every Yellow Herb permanently increases Leon’s maximum health while also restoring health.
To fully upgrade Leon’s health bar, you’ll need to consume all 12 Yellow Herbs available throughout the game.
Because Yellow Herbs become available gradually throughout the campaign, it’s worth combining and using them whenever possible rather than storing them indefinitely.
Consume Rhinoceros Beetles

Rhinoceros Beetles provide another permanent maximum health increase.
Three Rhinoceros Beetles can be found during the campaign. Although they are classified as valuable treasures and can be sold to the Merchant for Pesetas, consuming them permanently extends Leon’s maximum health instead.
Whether you sell or consume them depends on your priorities. Selling them provides an immediate source of Pesetas to spend at the Merchant, while consuming them offers a permanent survivability boost that carries throughout your playthrough and into New Game Plus (NG+).
What Doesn’t Increase Maximum Health?

Several items improve Leon’s survivability without increasing his health bar.
Body Armour
Body Armour reduces the damage Leon receives from enemy attacks while it remains intact. Although it eventually degrades and requires repairing at the Merchant, it can significantly improve survivability during difficult encounters.
Chicken Hat
The Chicken Hat is an unlockable accessory that also reduces incoming damage. While it doesn’t increase Leon’s maximum health, it makes combat considerably more forgiving, especially on Hardcore and Professional difficulties.
Unlike Yellow Herbs and Rhinoceros Beetles, neither Body Armour nor the Chicken Hat permanently extends Leon’s health bar. Instead, they reduce the amount of damage Leon takes, helping him survive longer during combat.
Increasing Leon’s maximum health is one of the most valuable long-term upgrades in Resident Evil 4 Remake. By consuming every Yellow Herb and Rhinoceros Beetle you find, you’ll permanently improve his survivability, while Body Armour and the Chicken Hat provide additional protection by reducing incoming damage rather than increasing his HP.
