Developers Capcom have dropped a free VR expansion for the recent critical and commercial smash hit Resident Evil 4 on PlayStation 5. Having arrived yesterday on December 8th with a playable demo, the DLC enables the entire survival horror adventure to be played start to finish in virtual reality on PS VR2. Stepping into protagonist Leon S. Kennedy’s shoes, players can experience the creepy world and tense action more intimately from a first-person perspective.

Building on Past VR Knowledge

Producer Masato Kumazawa reveals VR possibilities were already being discussed when Resident Evil 4 was announced last June. Development started in early 2023 right as work wrapped up on the core game.

Despite less than a year to implement, Capcom leveraged its VR development expertise from similar modes created for Resident Evil 7 and Village. Familiarity with the RE Engine and PS VR2’s unique features allowed the project to meet its tight deadline.

Realistic Weapons Handling

Handling weapons will be much easier

A key point of emphasis was making firearm and knife handling feel more realistic compared to RE Village. Players can now directly holster/unholster weapons and ammo clips with physical gestures. For example, guns no longer instantly fall to the floor when released, but instead return to inventory after a small delay. This enables reloading and wielding Leon’s arsenal more precisely using the PS VR2 Sense controllers.

Melee combat also got attention, evident in the climatic knife fight against Jack Krauser. Parrying strikes now utilises both hands, with visual knife impacts appearing right before players’ eyes. Capcom strived to open up new combat possibilities throughout the entire RE4 VR campaign.

Taking Advantage of PS VR2 Features

The DLC takes full advantage of PS VR2’s capabilities for greater levels of immersion. Adaptive triggers convey subtle differences when firing various pistol types. Environmental phenomena like explosions also trigger headset haptics and vibration for added visceral impact. Moreover, significant audio efforts enhance spatial awareness and directionality to detect enemies based on sounds using 3D audio.

Intensified Horror in First-Person

Transitioning from the core game’s over-the-shoulder third-person camera to a first-person VR view required control and mechanics overhauls. Yet it cements the feeling of physically inhabiting Leon rather than operating him externally.

This perspective change also amps up the horror ambience, putting players far more up close and personal with threats like the imposing El Gigante boss.

Certain moments even deliberately leverage VR scale, like when giant foes grab Leon during battles. While dizzying first-person sections can be switched to third-person, Capcom overall embraces VR’s capacity to ratchet up dramatic, white-knuckle moments versus the non-VR version. Environmental puzzles and quick time event interactions were likewise redesigned to feel more tactile and immersive.

Shared Vision for Mainstreaming VR

Kumazawa notes the VR expansion being completely free stems from Capcom’s commitment to continue pushing VR game development forward. The teams expressed a shared vision for removing barriers of entry to help virtual reality experiences reach wider mainstream popularity going forward.

Resident Evil 4 VR unlocks new horrors for returning fans, while representing an exciting way for franchise newcomers to be introduced to one of gaming’s scariest masterpieces. All PlayStation gamers with a PS5 and PS VR2 headset can experience survival horror made more intense through virtual reality.
