During a recent Resident Evil 30th anniversary reunion, Resident Evil 4 Remake actor André Peña revealed that Luis Serra was not the first character he auditioned to play.
Peña told the Fan Expo Canada panel that one of his earlier auditions was for Bitores Méndez, the imposing village chief encountered during the opening chapters of the game. He was later asked to audition for Luis before eventually receiving the role.
The actor joked about the physical mismatch between himself and Méndez during the panel, but the casting process also shows how broadly Capcom was testing performers before settling on the remake’s final characters.
Peña’s route to Luis was not straightforward either. He recalled travelling back from Mexico after being told the production wanted to meet him, with COVID-era quarantine requirements adding another delay before he could join the cast.
The project itself was kept secret during auditions.
Ashley Graham actor Genevieve Buechner said her audition used fake character names and material that did not identify Resident Evil. The description only referred to a AAA survival horror project and full performance capture, leaving her to speculate whether it might be Resident Evil, Silent Hill or Dead Space.
Buechner said Japanese names appearing during a later callback helped strengthen her suspicion that the project could be Resident Evil.
Both actors ultimately performed their characters through full performance capture rather than recording dialogue alone, meaning their body movement, facial acting and voice performances contributed to the final scenes.
Peña also explained that his first interpretation of Luis was considerably darker than the character players eventually saw.
The actor approached Luis with more visible weight from his past, particularly because of his involvement with Umbrella and his return to a village that had been transformed by Los Iluminados. During production, that performance was pulled back in favour of Luis hiding more of that regret behind humour and charisma.
I think that decision explains why RE4 Remake Luis works so well. His guilt is still present, but the game does not announce it every time he speaks, allowing the more serious side of the character to emerge gradually.
Peña pointed to Luis’ reaction when Méndez appears as one example of that subtext.
When Luis says “not this guy” during his early encounter with Leon, Peña interpreted the line as carrying more personal history than simple fear of Méndez. In the actor’s own interpretation, Méndez had once occupied something close to a father-figure role in Luis’ life.
That is Peña’s character interpretation rather than confirmed Resident Evil canon, but it gives some insight into the background he was using while performing the scene.
Luis later fights alongside Leon during the cabin battle, one of the remake’s most intense combat encounters, before his story becomes increasingly tied to Leon’s attempt to remove Las Plagas.
Buechner said Ashley’s rewritten character arc also gave her more confidence in the role.
The actor described Ashley as a major responsibility because of how memorable the original character had become, but said the remake’s script gave her a clearer progression from frightened captive to a more confident and independent character.
That development is visible throughout the campaign as Ashley moves from relying almost completely on Leon towards actively helping him during several later sequences.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake cast appeared as part of a much larger 30th anniversary gathering at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto on August 28. Residence of Evil hosted the panel, which brought together performers and crew from the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Code: Veronica, Resident Evil Outbreak and later entries.
The reunion included actors associated with Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Rebecca Chambers, Albert Wesker and several Resident Evil Outbreak characters alongside Peña and Buechner.
Three years after Resident Evil 4 Remake launched, the panel provides a rare look at how two of its most important supporting characters were cast and how their final performances evolved during production.
