Key Highlights:
- Cut content shows Resident Evil 4 Remake once opened with a playable Ashley Graham chapter.
- The unfinished “Chapter 0” focused on stealth, vulnerability, and horror before Leon appeared.
- Leftover files suggest Capcom cut it late to preserve pacing and replayability.
Cut content uncovered in Resident Evil 4 Remake has revealed that the game once opened very differently.
Before Leon S. Kennedy ever arrived in the village, Capcom had planned a playable introductory chapter starring Ashley Graham. Internally labelled “Chapter 0,” the sequence was never finished and was ultimately removed.
TwistedVoxel reported the find, and YouTuber Thekempy’s breakdown (embedded below) shows how leftover assets, triggers, and spawn points outline Capcom’s cut ‘Chapter 0’ intro.
The chapter would have begun with Ashley alone in the woods at night, immediately shifting the tone toward vulnerability rather than action. She would wander without a flashlight, making navigation deliberately difficult, before stumbling across members of Los Illuminados performing a ritual sacrifice. That moment briefly appears in the October 2022 story trailer, which now reads like a leftover echo of a much darker opening.
From there, the sequence appears designed around evasion rather than combat. Leftover triggers show Ashley sneaking past Ganado patrols, climbing through a hut window, crawling through a tunnel, and hiding in tight spaces. At one point, her animations switch to a more frantic state after she spots a Ganado carrying Luis Sera, triggering a chase sequence as enemies descend the hillside. The camera even pulls back behind her to emphasise pursuit before the trail ends, likely leading into her capture and imprisonment at the church.
From a design standpoint, I can see exactly why Capcom explored this idea. Playing as Ashley first would have reframed the entire story, grounding the horror in fear and helplessness before handing control to Leon Kennedy. It would have made her feel less like an escort objective and more like a survivor who has already endured trauma by the time Leon finds her.
I can also see why it was cut. Resident Evil 4 Remake is extremely replayable, and a slow, stealth-heavy prologue with no combat would have added friction every time players restarted the game. As interesting as Chapter 0 sounds, it likely clashed with the game’s pacing goals and early momentum.
What stands out most is how late this appears to have existed in development. The presence of map routes, spawn points, autosave triggers, and animation states suggests this was more than a loose concept. It feels like a complete idea that was sacrificed for cohesion rather than a discarded experiment.
As a fan of the RE4 Remake, I think Capcom made the right call, but I would still love to see this restored or reworked as a standalone bonus. Chapter 0 would not have replaced the opening we got, but as an optional prologue, it could have added meaningful context to Ashley’s character without compromising the core experience.
