Ubisoft released the Far Cry 3 Outpost companion app for iOS and Android, giving Far Cry 3 players access to several multiplayer and co-op features away from the game.
The free app connected to Far Cry 3’s online systems and allowed players to decode encrypted data collected during multiplayer and co-op sessions. Successful decoding could unlock advanced weapon modifications or bonus XP, while decoded items could also be accepted, given to friends or sold for additional XP.
Players could also view and customise multiplayer loadouts directly through the app, ready for their next session. Ubisoft included support for Daily and Weekly Challenges, personal and friend statistics, and tracking for maps created through Far Cry 3’s in-game Map Editor.
Another feature called The Grid gave players a way to unlock additional encrypted data sources while away from the main game, extending Far Cry 3’s multiplayer progression onto mobile devices.
Far Cry 3 Outpost had originally been intended as a companion to the game’s launch, but its wider promotional push arrived afterwards. Ubisoft was actively advertising the app in January 2013, several weeks before this GLN article was published.
Ubisoft continued supporting the game after Outpost’s release, including a later Far Cry 3 gameplay update built around fan-requested changes.
The app eventually became obsolete as support for Far Cry 3’s older online systems was wound down. Ubisoft later retired online services for the original Far Cry 3 as part of its programme of decommissioning legacy game infrastructure, with the final shutdown moved to 1 October 2022.
