Capcom asked Resident Evil fans which game in the series they would most like to see remade as part of a wide-ranging player survey distributed in 2023.
The question arrived shortly after the release of Resident Evil 4 Remake and fuelled speculation over which older entry Capcom could revisit next.
The survey itself did not confirm that another remake was in development. It did, however, provide direct evidence that Capcom was interested in measuring player demand for future Resident Evil remakes.
What Did Capcom Ask Resident Evil Fans?
Capcom’s survey covered several areas of the Resident Evil franchise, including the Ambassador Programme, RE NET and adaptations outside video games.
One of its closing questions asked players which Resident Evil game they would most like to see remade.
Resident Evil Code: Veronica X quickly became part of the discussion surrounding the survey. The 2000 game follows Claire Redfield after the events of Resident Evil 2 and had frequently been requested by players during Capcom’s modern run of remakes.
At the time, however, the survey provided no evidence that Code Veronica or any other specific Resident Evil remake had entered development.
Why Another Resident Evil Remake Made Sense
Capcom had already rebuilt Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 by the time the survey appeared.
Those remakes were also becoming increasingly important commercially. Resident Evil 2 Remake had become Capcom’s best-selling Resident Evil game by August 2023, while Resident Evil 4 was beginning what would become an unusually long sales run.
Resident Evil 4 eventually became the best-selling remake of the current console generation, with Capcom reporting 16.04 million official sales by 30 June 2026.
The commercial performance of these games does not prove that sales determined Capcom’s response to the 2023 survey. It does show that remakes developed into a major part of the company’s Resident Evil strategy.
What Happened After Capcom’s 2023 Survey?
Three years after the survey, Capcom officially announced Resident Evil Veronica in June 2026.
The project is a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X and is scheduled for release in 2027. Claire Redfield returns as the protagonist, taking one of the games frequently discussed as a potential remake in 2023 from fan speculation to an officially announced Capcom project.
Capcom has also made its wider strategy clearer since the original survey. Resident Evil producer Masachika Kawata explained in 2026 that remakes help the company maintain a more regular release schedule alongside new mainline games.
The 2023 survey therefore remains an interesting early record of Capcom directly asking its audience which parts of Resident Evil’s history they wanted the company to revisit.
