Capcom has officially confirmed what Resident Evil fans have been hoping for, revealing a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica during Summer Game Fest.
Simply titled Resident Evil Veronica, the game is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
The announcement trailer opened with an unnamed woman arriving at a Paris apartment before eventually revealing that the character was none other than Claire Redfield. The footage confirmed that Capcom is revisiting one of the franchise’s most beloved stories, bringing the events of Code: Veronica to modern hardware.
According to the game’s official description, Resident Evil Veronica preserves the core of the original while introducing modernised gameplay systems, a reimagined storyline, and enhanced visuals.
“In 2027, madness and intrigue, love and hate all combine to create a chilling new entry in survival horror,” the description states.
Originally released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000 under the guidance of series creator Shinji Mikami, Code: Veronica follows Claire Redfield’s search for her brother Chris after the events of Resident Evil 2. The story takes players from a remote prison island to Antarctica as the siblings battle another outbreak and encounter series antagonist Albert Wesker.
Although it wasn’t a numbered entry, Code: Veronica has long been viewed by fans as a crucial chapter in the franchise’s timeline. In fact, reports over the years have suggested it was originally intended to serve as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2 before business agreements led to it being positioned differently.
Many fans also regard Code: Veronica as the final traditional survival horror game in the series before Resident Evil 4 shifted the franchise towards a more action-focused style.
An enhanced version, Code: Veronica X, later arrived on PlayStation 2 and GameCube before being re-released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Resident Evil Veronica will become the fifth major remake in the series. Capcom previously rebuilt the original Resident Evil on GameCube in 2002 before releasing acclaimed remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, all of which went on to sell millions of copies worldwide.
The reveal itself may not come as a huge shock. Rumours surrounding a Code: Veronica remake have circulated for years, with multiple reports pointing towards a 2027 launch window. Previous claims also suggested that Capcom was planning a Resident Evil Zero remake, though the company has yet to officially confirm that project.
From my perspective, Code: Veronica was always one of the most obvious candidates for a remake. Its story plays a major role in the wider Resident Evil universe, and modernising locations like Rockfort Island and Antarctica could make for one of the series’ most atmospheric entries yet.
The Resident Evil 4 Remake is currently at an all-time low price with a whopping 75% off on all platforms.
Resident Evil Veronica launches in 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
