A veritable digital rabbit has hopped out of the proverbial hat with leaked footage of a playable Amy Rose and her sparkling Super Form in the upcoming ‘Sonic Origins Plus’. The internet is ablaze with speculation and reaction, offering a delightful appetiser ahead of the expansion’s official launch this June. This much-anticipated addition to the original ‘Sonic Origins’ game, which came to life last summer, includes a trove of 12 Sega Game Gear games, and the pièce de résistance, our very own playable Classic Amy Rose.

Amy Rose: Transformation and Controversy in Sonic Origins Plus

The addition of Amy Rose to the rosters of Sonic Origins Plus is met with fanfare as she joins the esteemed company of robot-bashing heroes. The inclusion was also viewed as an enticing tease of a long-awaited spectacle: Super Amy. The Super Saiyan-inspired transformation, a nod to ‘Dragon Ball Z’, has remained a treasured fixture in the franchise but has seen limited airtime beyond Sonic. However, Amy Rose’s ascension to Super and Hyper forms has divided the fandom over their aesthetic appeal.

The sneak-peek into these supercharged forms originated from YouTuber Sekaimen, offering an all-access showcase of the Super and Hyper transformations achievable in Sonic Origins Plus. The video has not been sourced because it has since been taken down by YouTube most probably due to a copyright infringement. Once players hit the jackpot of collecting all the Chaos Emeralds or Super Emeralds, depending on the game, Super Amy steps into the limelight.

Her transformation features a distinct sprite where her quills and fur adopt a vibrant pink hue, making her an indestructible force. This palette doesn’t undergo much change in her Hyper form. While the confirmation of Super Amy sent waves of elation through the fanbase, others found the design a tad underwhelming.

Sonic Origins Plus: Can We Expect More of Super Amy?

The main gripe amongst the critics is that Super Amy’s makeover appeared lacklustre, boiling down to a simple hue change and a shiny aura. Fans pointed out the same paint-by-numbers approach used for Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, and Ray in their Super Forms in classic games and ‘Sonic Mania’, arguing that they would’ve preferred a more original, character-specific redesign over the standard palette swap.

On the other hand, some fans were overjoyed to see Amy Rose join the Super league, with many gleefully pointing out their predictions on her appearance were spot on. Fans are holding out hope that this isn’t a one-time spectacle and that Super Amy would make her mark in future games like the upcoming Sonic Superstars.

‘Sonic Origins’ is now a button press away on Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Sonic Origins Plus is set to make its grand entry on June 23rd, 2023.
