Sony has revealed a limited-edition PlayStation 5 and DualSense wireless controller inspired by Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, with pre-orders opening on July 28.
The new hardware was unveiled alongside Insomniac Games’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation and uses a red-and-black design based around the symbiote threat at the centre of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
The full PS5 Console – Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition Bundle includes a custom PS5 console, matching limited-edition DualSense wireless controller and a voucher for the digital Standard Edition of the game.
Players who already own a PS5 will not need to buy another console to get the design. Sony is also selling the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 console covers separately for both the standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition, while the themed DualSense controller will also be available on its own.
Sony’s official hardware announcement confirms that pre-orders begin on July 28, with the bundle, console covers and DualSense scheduled to become available from September 1 in supported markets.
The game itself will not unlock with the hardware in September. The digital Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 voucher included with the bundle can be redeemed when the game launches on October 20.
The design directly reflects the conflict between Spider-Man and the symbiote. Black tendrils spread across the red console cover towards the white Spider-Man emblem, while the rear of the console is almost completely overtaken by the black design.
Jacinda Chew, Senior Art Director, Insomniac Games said:
“The design was inspired by the in-game symbiote that’s taking over the console and controller, but you can still see some of the underlying red under the tendrils.”
I think that connection to the game’s central symbiote conflict makes the hardware more meaningful than simply placing Spider-Man artwork on a standard PS5. The design is attempting to represent part of the story visually before players even start the game.
The limited-edition bundle also includes the same pre-order incentives offered with other Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 pre-orders: early unlocks for Peter Parker’s Arachknight Suit and Miles Morales’ Shadow Spider Suit, additional colour variants for both, an early Web Grabber gadget unlock and three skill points.
Sony says availability will be limited, with the products being sold through PlayStation Direct in several markets including the UK and through selected retailers elsewhere.
The hardware launches on September 1, giving players almost seven weeks to use the themed PS5 and DualSense before Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 releases exclusively for PS5 on October 20.
Later update: Pre-orders opened on July 28, 2023, and the separate Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 console covers sold out within minutes.
The standalone console covers quickly became unavailable through PlayStation Direct and other retailers, while availability for the full PS5 bundle and limited-edition DualSense controller varied by store and region.
The covers were especially popular with existing PS5 owners because they offered the Spider-Man 2 design without requiring the purchase of another console.
