Hugely Successful RPG Baldur’s Gate 3 Confirmed for Xbox Series X/S With Compromises This Year.
Exciting news for Xbox faithful – Larian Studios’ critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 revival now has a hazy release window for Microsoft’s platforms. But compromises appear necessary to bring the expansive RPG to all Xbox iterations before 2023 concludes.
BG3’s ambitious early access PC launch and more recent PS5 release gained rave reviews for revitalising Black Isle’s seminal franchise. That initial PlayStation console exclusivity fueled doubts about eventual Xbox plans, given lack of dates. But Larian CEO Swen Vincke just reaffirmed Xbox iterations are still full steam ahead.
Xbox Series S Won’t Get Local Co-Op Due to Technical Limitations
Speaking during a Gamescom show, Vincke confirmed BG3 should hit Xbox consoles by end of year. However, accommodations are required for the attainable Series S – split-screen local co-op won’t make the cut there.
That signature feature allowing couch playthroughs like an intimate D&D campaign unfortunately exceeds the S hardware’s limits. But Xbox players can still adventure online together cross-platform. And single-player remains uncompromised.
Beyond co-op, feature parity looks promising between Xbox and existing versions. Cross-save compatibility also means progress transfers across Xbox, PlayStation and PC. It’s not perfect, but provides accessibility.
And Series X should sport zero compromises based on promises of complete parity with PC. Those seeking the definitive living room BG3 experience need Microsoft’s pricier powerhouse. But S owners aren’t left behind, albeit with multiplayer limitations.
This news comes after Vincke and Xbox’s Phil Spencer strategized bringing the hit RPG into the Microsoft ecosystem this year. It may miss PS5’s September 6th launch, but 2023 seems likely for Xbox debut.
With massive worlds and CRPG complexity, realizing BG3’s scope was undoubtedly an uphill battle on Xbox hardware. Some restrain was inevitable contrasted to top-end gaming PCs.
