New footage from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 appears to tease Mysterio, with viewers spotting both a possible Quentin Beck appearance and unusual symbols that could be connected to the illusionist.
The clues appeared during PlayStation’s September 14 State of Play, where Insomniac Games provided a broader look at exploration, activities, suits and character switching across its expanded version of New York.
GLN covered the wider Spider-Man 2 State of Play reveal, but several brief moments in the footage point towards another character Insomniac has not yet formally announced.
One shot appears to show a man resembling Quentin Beck wearing a purple coat and scarf. His identity is not stated in the footage, so the resemblance alone is not enough to confirm that the character is Mysterio.
The stronger clue comes from a series of unusual green and purple symbols visible around the city. Their appearance and colour scheme have led to speculation that they belong to Mysterio and may mark a specific type of side activity.
Insomniac’s official State of Play breakdown confirms that Spider-Man 2 will include additional city activities and new ways to discover them while exploring Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, although it does not identify the mysterious symbols or mention Mysterio by name.
There is also precedent for Quentin Beck existing within Insomniac’s version of Spider-Man.
During the Halloween party sequence in Marvel’s Spider-Man, Peter encounters someone wearing a classic Mysterio costume. The scene does not establish whether Beck himself is present, but Peter’s reaction suggests Mysterio is already known within this universe rather than being an entirely new threat.
That makes the September footage particularly interesting. If the man shown is Quentin Beck, Spider-Man 2 may be introducing the actual character after previously acknowledging Mysterio through environmental storytelling.
Mysterio traditionally relies on illusions, special effects and deception rather than conventional superhuman powers. Marvel describes Quentin Beck as one of Spider-Man’s long-standing illusion-based adversaries, with elaborate tricks often making it difficult for Spider-Man to determine what is real.
The possibility that the strange symbols represent dedicated activities would also fit Insomniac’s approach to optional villain content. The original Marvel’s Spider-Man used characters such as Taskmaster and Tombstone outside its central villain storyline, allowing recognised Spider-Man enemies to support separate mission chains.
I see the symbols as stronger evidence than the clothing alone. A purple outfit can be coincidental, but a possible Quentin Beck appearance alongside repeated visual markers with an illusionist aesthetic creates a much more specific connection.
For now, however, Mysterio remains unconfirmed. Insomniac has not identified Quentin Beck, explained the symbols or revealed whether either clue represents a full side story.

Later update: The finished game confirms that the man shown was Quentin Beck and that the mysterious symbols were connected to Mysteriums, optional challenges built around Mysterio’s illusion technology.
Beck is attempting to leave his criminal identity behind and uses the Mysteriums as entertainment attractions, but Miles Morales discovers that people are becoming trapped inside them. The storyline eventually reveals that Beck’s associates Betsy Schneider and Cole Wittman are responsible for sabotaging the technology and attempting to frame him.
