Insomniac Games has confirmed that Gwen Stacy is not part of the story being told in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 when the sequel launches for PlayStation 5 on October 20.
Narrative Director Jon Paquette addressed Gwen directly during a recent interview with TheGamer, explaining that Insomniac regularly considers a wide range of Marvel characters while developing its stories.
Paquette said ideas come from across the development team, but the studio ultimately has to remain focused on the particular story it wants to tell.
Gwen did not fit that story.
That does not mean Insomniac has permanently ruled the character out of its version of the Marvel universe. Paquette left the possibility open when discussing what could happen beyond Spider-Man 2, but offered no indication that Gwen is currently planned for another game.
The confirmation is notable because Gwen Stacy has become an increasingly prominent Spider-Man character outside the games.
In Marvel comics, Gwen was originally introduced as one of Peter Parker’s most important relationships before her death became a defining part of his history. A different version of Gwen later became the spider-powered hero commonly known as Spider-Gwen or Ghost-Spider.
That incarnation has gained considerably wider recognition through Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where Gwen fights alongside Miles Morales as part of a much larger multiverse of Spider-People.
Insomniac’s universe has taken a different approach.
Peter Parker and Miles Morales remain the two Spider-Men at the centre of Spider-Man 2, with the sequel built around switching between both heroes. While Mary Jane Watson, Ganke Lee and other characters established through the previous games continuing to support their respective stories.
What stands out to me is that Paquette’s answer shuts down the need to interpret every unexplained character or Easter egg as groundwork for Spider-Gwen.
Whether Gwen Stacy eventually appears elsewhere in Insomniac’s Spider-Man universe remains unanswered.
