The ever-popular Zombies mode is shambling back into action with the highly anticipated launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This time, players will be dropped into an expansive open-world space and tasked with fending off swarms of the undead.
Task Force 141 Battles the Undead
Historically, the Modern Warfare sub-franchise has favoured modes like Spec Ops and the Atomgrad raids. However, with Sledgehammer now steering the ship, Task Force 141 will confront the walking corpses for the first time in the rebooted series.
Modern Warfare 3 marks the third chapter in the reimagined MW saga, picking up after the seismic events of 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 and its subsequent seasons. Front and Centre is Vladimir Makarov, the mastermind hinted to be behind MW2, who will make his dramatic debut. Captain Price is back to lead Task Force 141 on a desperate mission to stop Makarov from igniting World War 3. But the villain has his own deadly force, the Konni Group, to counter the special ops team.
Dark Aether Saga’s Next Chapter
Alongside the campaign and multiplayer, Sledgehammer lifted the lid on the open-world Zombies mode with a cinematic trailer depicting the outbreak Task Force 141 must contain. Modern Warfare 3’s Zombies continues the Dark Aether Saga, begun in Vanguard and expanded in Black Ops Cold War.
The main adversary is Victor Zakhaev, head of the private military group Terminus Outcomes. An incursion by Zakhaev to escape with the mysterious substance Aetherium triggers the rapidly spreading infection, forcing Task Force 141 into the containment operation codenamed Deadbolt.
Massive New Map Teased
Sledgehammer boasted this is the largest Zombies map ever in Call of Duty, promising players ample room to fight and evade the zombie hordes. The location was not disclosed, only that a secretive military base was the site of Zakhaev’s chaotic scheme. The trailer confirmed Soap and Kate Laswell will represent Task Force 141, while Sergei Ravanov from Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies returns.
More Call of Duty Content:
It remains to be seen how this bold new Zombies is received, when compared to Modern Warfare 3’s other offerings. Multiplayer fans can battle on 16 remastered maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. Those invested in the campaign can experiment with play-styles in the Open Combat Missions.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 arrives November the 10th for PC and all major consoles.
