PlayStation’s new launch trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has officially revealed Sandman as one of the villains Peter Parker and Miles Morales will face. Released on October 15, the 73-second video combines gameplay footage and in-game cinematics, offering another look at the sequel ahead of its October 20 PS5 launch.
Sandman’s appearance is the trailer’s biggest new revelation. The enormous villain towers over New York City, demonstrating the scale of the confrontation awaiting the Spider-Men. His inclusion also confirms that Flint Marko, the character behind Sandman in Marvel’s comics, is part of Insomniac’s expanding roster of antagonists.
The reveal is particularly noteworthy because Sandman had already appeared in the leaked first hour of Spider-Man 2 gameplay. That footage circulated online before the game’s release, but PlayStation’s new trailer marks the character’s official public introduction.
Sandman can transform his body into sand and manipulate it to create enormous structures and powerful attacks. His gigantic appearance suggests an encounter quite different from the more conventional fights against human-sized enemies shown in earlier footage, although the trailer does not explain the full mechanics of the battle.
What catches my attention is the contrast between Sandman’s sheer size and the increasingly personal threat posed by the symbiote. Insomniac is presenting two very different kinds of danger: a villain capable of overwhelming the Spider-Men physically and an alien influence that threatens Peter’s relationships and judgement.
Beyond Sandman, the trailer revisits Kraven the Hunter, Lizard and Venom, all previously confirmed as major threats. Peter’s black symbiote suit also features prominently, reinforcing the changes to his powers and behaviour that Insomniac has been teasing throughout the game’s marketing.
According to PlayStation’s official description, the story takes place nine months after Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Peter and Miles must balance their responsibilities as superheroes while Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn and their friends become increasingly involved in the dangers surrounding the symbiote.
The launch trailer brings these threats together without fully revealing how their respective storylines connect. With Sandman now officially confirmed, players have another established Spider-Man villain to contend with when the sequel arrives on October 20.
