Why Does Kraven Hunt New York’s Supervillains?
Kraven is suffering from terminal cancer and wants to die fighting an opponent powerful enough to defeat him, rather than succumb to his illness.
His arrival in New York places numerous former Spider-Man enemies within reach, including dangerous criminals with specialised weapons, enhanced abilities and extensive combat experience.
Rather than simply confronting each villain without preparation, Kraven investigates their abilities and weaknesses. His Hunters capture targets, secure equipment and gather information that gives him an advantage before the confrontation.
Scorpion provides the clearest example. Kraven develops protection against Mac Gargan’s poison before their encounter, allowing him to survive a strike from the villain’s mechanical tail and kill him with his own stinger.
Although Kraven claims to seek an honourable death, these preparations suggest that his obsession with proving himself remains as important as finding an opponent capable of defeating him.
Why Was Vulture One of Kraven’s Targets?
Adrian Toomes is an unusual choice because Marvel’s Spider-Man established that prolonged exposure to the power source in his wingsuit had caused spinal cancer.
Otto Octavius previously promised to help treat the illness in exchange for Vulture joining the Sinister Six. His medical history makes Kraven’s decision to hunt him especially interesting.
However, Vulture possesses advantages beyond physical strength. His mechanical wings provide aerial mobility and high-speed attacks, while his technical expertise makes him a dangerous opponent despite his declining health.
Kraven’s recordings indicate that he was interested in testing those abilities but ultimately found Vulture disappointing.
During Mary Jane Watson’s infiltration of the Hunters’ abandoned zoo in Good Men, she discovers Vulture’s severed wings and a recording confirming that Kraven defeated him.
I find Kraven’s treatment of Vulture particularly revealing. Both men are facing serious illness, yet Kraven appears more interested in whether Toomes can overcome him than in their shared circumstances. The game never confirms whether Vulture’s cancer influenced his selection.
What Happened to Electro and Shocker?
Vulture was not the only established villain killed away from the main storyline.
During the same investigation, Mary Jane discovers equipment belonging to Electro and Shocker, alongside recordings documenting Kraven’s encounters with them.
Kraven dismisses Electro as weak in both body and mind, although he considers the villain’s technology potentially useful.
Shocker receives a more favourable assessment. Kraven acknowledges Herman Schultz’s determination to survive and describes a particularly fierce struggle, but ultimately kills him with a blade.
These findings help explain Kraven’s frustration. His targets possess different strengths, yet none provides the defeat he desperately seeks.
The evidence also gives additional importance to Mary Jane Watson’s playable investigation, since much of Kraven’s brutality would otherwise remain unseen.
Why Does Kraven Choose Spider-Man and Venom?
Kraven eventually becomes interested in Peter Parker after witnessing the extraordinary strength provided by the symbiote.
He recognises that this enhanced Spider-Man may offer a greater challenge than the villains he has already defeated.
Their confrontation brings Kraven closer to his desired outcome, but Peter ultimately refuses to kill him.
Kraven later encounters Venom, who proves powerful enough to end his life during their confrontation in Times Square.
This conclusion gives Kraven the death he sought, although his earlier victims expose the cruelty behind his pursuit of a worthy opponent.
Vulture’s illness, Shocker’s desperate resistance and Scorpion’s defeat show that Kraven’s hunts were never simply contests between equally prepared combatants. His determination to control every encounter made him a formidable predator, but it also undermined the honour he claimed to value.
