NetherRealm Studios has released a new Season 3 trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, introducing The Cryomancer, a winter-themed Invasions season featuring Sub-Zero as its main boss and more than 150 unlockable rewards.
The new season launched on 14 December 2023, bringing fresh challenges, story content, boss encounters and icy cosmetics to the game’s single-player Invasions mode.
The trailer also arrives alongside several other developments, including Quan Chi’s early-access release, improvements to pre-fight introductions and confirmation that Krossplay is being targeted for February 2024.
Sub-Zero Leads Season 3 With Over 150 Rewards
Season 3: The Cryomancer centres on Sub-Zero, whose campaign as the latest Invasions boss introduces a frozen theme to the mode’s encounters and character rewards.
Players must progress through the seasonal challenges and defeat powerful opponents, with exclusive cosmetics available through both Invasions and Kombat League.
NetherRealm has confirmed more than 150 rewards, including skins such as Icy Resolve Sub-Zero, Icy Edenian Kitana, Winter History Geras, Frigid Guardian Tanya and Cryoblaze Scorpion.
The trailer also showcases the striking Frozen Daybreaker Baraka and Snow Mountain General Shao appearances, giving both characters an icy makeover.
Importantly, the reward pool isn’t limited to defeating Sub-Zero himself. Players can earn different rewards across the seasonal content, making progression through Invasions and Kombat League part of the wider collection.
I particularly like the consistency of the new visual theme. Rather than simply introducing another boss battle, NetherRealm has carried Sub-Zero’s ice-based identity across multiple fighters, making Season 3 feel distinct from the previous Invasions content.
Quan Chi Arrives as NetherRealm Prepares Krossplay
The launch of The Cryomancer coincides with the arrival of Quan Chi, who became playable on 14 December for Kombat Pack and Premium Edition owners.
The returning sorcerer uses necromancy, portals and supernatural attacks, all demonstrated in the recently released Quan Chi gameplay trailer.
Players without early access will be able to purchase Quan Chi separately from 21 December 2023.
The December update also expands character introductions into additional single-player encounters. Pre-fight dialogue can now appear during selected Invasions boss battles and Towers encounters, giving players more opportunities to hear conversations between fighters.
For online multiplayer, NetherRealm has introduced a connection filter that allows players to review connection information before accepting certain matches.
An even larger multiplayer improvement is planned for February 2024, with Krossplay intended to bring PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC players together across supported online modes. Nintendo Switch is not included in the announced Krossplay rollout.
Together, these additions make December a substantial month for Mortal Kombat 1. Season 3 provides a fresh collection of challenges and rewards, while Quan Chi and the accompanying improvements expand the game’s roster and existing features.
Later Update: NetherRealm continued expanding Invasions with new themes, rewards and gameplay improvements. GLN subsequently covered the Mortal Kombat 1 Season 6 Invasions update, which introduced another collection of seasonal skins alongside further changes to the mode.
