Spider-Man 2 Set for New Game Plus, Extra Features and More

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will receive its long-awaited New Game Plus update on 7 March 2024, allowing players to replay the campaign with their previously unlocked suits and abilities. Version 1.002 will also introduce Mission Replay, additional customisation options, accessibility improvements and four new costumes for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

The official PlayStation Blog announcement outlines several features arriving together, including Ultimate Levels, Golden Gadget styles and new colour variations for Peter’s symbiote suits.

Following the original absence of New Game Plus at launch, players will finally be able to restart the story while retaining their existing progression. Ultimate Levels will extend character progression beyond the original level cap, unlocking further cosmetic rewards rather than introducing an entirely separate set of challenge missions.

Mission Replay offers another option, allowing players to revisit individual story missions without beginning a complete second playthrough.

I think Mission Replay could prove just as valuable as New Game Plus itself. Spider-Man 2 contains several memorable boss encounters and cinematic sequences, and being able to revisit them individually removes the need to complete hours of earlier story content.

The update also expands costume customisation with additional symbiote suit styles, selectable symbiote ability colours and Golden Gadget appearances. These additions build on the existing wardrobe covered in the Spider-Man 2 suit unlocking and crafting guide.

Two free Hellfire Gala costumes will join the collection, featuring Peter Parker in a design by Marvel artist Russell Dauterman and Miles Morales in an outfit created by Bernard Chang.

Photo Mode is receiving Action Figure Mode, allowing players to create miniature-looking character compositions, alongside additional stickers. Players who have completed the campaign will also be able to change the time of day, offering more control over the lighting and atmosphere of their screenshots.

Accessibility improvements include Audio Descriptions for cinematics, a Screen Reader for menus and interface information, Cinematic Captions and High Contrast Outlines. These additions are intended to make the game more accessible to players with different visual, hearing and navigation requirements.

Insomniac is also collaborating with Marvel Games and Gameheads, an organisation supporting young people from underrepresented backgrounds who want to enter the gaming industry.

The Fly N’ Fresh Suit Pack will cost $4.99 for early access and includes:

• Fresh Suit for Miles Morales
• 10 Photo Mode stickers
• Two Photo Mode frames

Between 7 March and 5 April 2024, PlayStation will donate $4.99 from each qualifying US purchase to Gameheads, up to a maximum of $1 million. Purchases outside the United States are not included in the donation arrangement, and Insomniac has confirmed the pack will become available to everyone at no additional cost later.

The costumes were developed with contributions from six Gameheads students working alongside Insomniac’s artists. Miles’ Fresh Suit takes inspiration from 1990s b-boy fashion, while Peter’s Fly Suit draws on television styles from the same decade.

The March update therefore extends more than the game’s replayability. It introduces ways to revisit missions, personalise both Spider-Men and access previously unavailable presentation features, while the Gameheads collaboration provides an opportunity for aspiring developers and artists to contribute directly to a major PlayStation release.

Later Update: Update 1.002 launched on 7 March as scheduled, delivering New Game Plus, Mission Replay and the announced accessibility and customisation features. The Fly N’ Fresh Suit Pack subsequently became available for free on the PlayStation Store in November 2024, meaning players no longer need to purchase the costumes.
