Battlefield 2042: Ending One Chapter, Preparing for the Next

The Battlefield franchise has long been a staple in the world of first-person shooter games, offering intense, squad-based combat and immersive, large-scale battles.

However, the latest instalment, Battlefield 2042, faced a challenging launch, with players voicing concerns about the game’s stability and lack of content.

Despite these initial struggles, the development team at EA and DICE has worked tirelessly to improve the FPS through numerous updates and seasonal content releases.

The game has since found its footing with a revived player count and has become a much more enjoyable experience for players.

Closing the Book on Battlefield 2042

Yet, as the team looks to the future of the franchise, it has become clear that the resources required to continue supporting Battlefield 2042 would be better allocated to developing the next chapter of the series.

In a recent announcement, EA’s Battlefield general manager Bryan Breede, confirmed that the title’s seventh season, Turning Point, would be the last major content update for Battlefield 2042.

While the game’s servers will remain online and continue to receive smaller updates for maintenance and bug fixes, the development team is now shifting its focus to “what comes next” for the shoot ’em up franchise.

Breede acknowledged that this news may be “disappointing” for fans, but he emphasised the team’s “ambitious vision” to unlock the full potential of the series’ class-based squad play and immersive, intense battles.

To help realise this vision, EA has brought in a new partner to the Battlefield team – Motive Studio.

The team behind the critically acclaimed Dead Space remake and Star Wars: Squadrons will be building a dedicated Battlefield-focused team at their studio.

The directors responsible for the Dead Space remake, Philippe Ducharme (executive producer) and Roman Campos-Oriola (creative director), will lead this new initiative.

Their expertise in storytelling, immersive battle experiences, and working with the Frostbite engine is seen as a valuable asset in advancing the iconic FPS franchise.

Motive Studio will be joining other EA studios, such as DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect, in supporting and shaping the future of the Battlefield series.

This collaborative approach mirrors the strategy employed by Activision with the Call of Duty franchise, where multiple studios work together to continuously expand and improve the gaming experience.

While no specific details have been revealed about the next entry, the addition of Motive Studio to the team and the shift in focus suggest that EA has ambitious plans for the series.

The question remains whether the publisher can avoid the challenges that plagued the launch of the first-person shooter and deliver a truly transformative and polished shooter next time out.

As the FPS’s community bids farewell to the current chapter and looks towards the future, the anticipation builds for the next evolution of this iconic shooter series.

With the combined expertise of multiple EA studios and a renewed focus on realising the full potential, players can hope for a more immersive, refined, and engaging Battlefield experience to come.
