Capcom Unveils Next Chapter in Resident Evil Saga
Capcom has officially confirmed that a new entry in the Resident Evil franchise is currently in development, putting an end to months of speculation and rumours.
The announcement came during the company’s Capcom Next Summer 2024 stream, exciting fans of the long-running survival horror series. We’ve embedded the chapter to exactly the 24:25 mark in the video when the announcement is made which you can view below:
At the helm of this new project is Koshi Nakanishi, the director behind the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Nakanishi’s involvement suggests that Capcom is looking to build upon the success of recent entries in the series, which have been praised for reinvigorating the franchise.
“It was really difficult to figure out what to do after [Resident Evil 7],” Nakanishi said during the stream. “But I found it, and to be honest it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
Nakanishi’s history with the RE series runs deep. Beyond his work on Resident Evil 7, he directed Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS and the first RE Revelations game.
He also served as a designer on Resident Evil 5, giving him a comprehensive understanding of the franchise’s evolution over the years.
While Capcom has not officially labelled this new project as Resident Evil 9, it will be the tenth mainline instalment in the series.
The announcement follows the successful releases of Resident Evil Village and the Resident Evil 4 remake, both of which were Game of the Year contenders in their respective years.
Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, the developers are keeping details tightly under wraps. No information about the game’s setting, characters, or release window has been shared, leaving fans to speculate about the direction this new entry might take.
The iconic survival horror franchise has seen a resurgence in recent years, with Capcom successfully balancing remakes of classic titles with new, innovative entries.
This strategy has helped maintain the series’ relevance and popularity among both long-time fans and newcomers.
The Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was also given some limelight in the same stream. A zombie horror title that has been dormant for years, when it does return this September, it’ll be landing on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC.
As development on the new Resident Evil title continues, fans can look forward to more announcements in the coming months.
With Nakanishi at the helm and Capcom’s recent track record, expectations are high for this next chapter in one of gaming’s most iconic horror franchises.
