Capcom has another juggernaut hit on its hands with the critically-acclaimed Resident Evil 4 remake. In a press release, the publisher revealed the survival horror juggernaut has crossed a massive sales threshold – surpassing 7 million copies sold globally in just under one year since launch.

This blockbuster performance doesn’t come as a total surprise given RE4’s near-universal praise from fans and critics alike.

The painstaking remake struck a perfect balance of retaining the original’s beloved DNA while modernising the gameplay and visuals for a new generation.

In reaching these lofty sales heights so quickly, it dethroned the previous Resident Evil 2 remake as the franchise’s fastest-selling entry.

Post-Launch Support

Part of RE4’s longevity stems from Capcom’s commitment to sustaining it with a steady stream of free updates and paid DLC additions.

Mere months after release, owners received the Separate Ways DLC side campaign starring the fan-favourite Ada Wong.

This was followed by a PlayStation VR2 mode for an even more immersive horror experience. More recently, the Mercenaries mini-game made its triumphant return alongside an unexpected port to iOS Android devices and Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro.

The title even achieved the coveted gold status last month. The Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition Included the main game, Separate Ways DLC and more.

This barrage of fresh content gave players compelling reasons to keep returning to the game throughout 2023 and 2024. With over 7 million diehard zombie slayers double-dipping, it’s clear Capcom’s post-launch roadmap paid dividends.

Future Remakes on the Horizon?

As Resident Evil 4 achieved this incredible sales milestone, fans quickly began speculating about what iconic chapter could get the remake treatment next.

The prime candidate seems to be Resident Evil 5 – the polarising 2009 co-op shooter that split the fan base over its more action-oriented tone.

Recent rumblings suggest Capcom has already started initial work on remaking this entry to coincide with the franchise’s 30th anniversary in 2026. Alleged leaks point to a codename “Revision” appearing in backend databases. However, the publisher has remained tight-lipped so far.

If greenlit, a renewed Resident Evil 5 could represent Capcom’s next big opportunity to both revive a cult classic while implementing lessons learned across their well-received recent remakes.

Many feel RE5’s campy charm and buddy cop narrative deserve another chance to shine with modern visuals and smarter mechanics. That is not set in stone however, as there are bigger clues that a Code Veronica X reboot is in development.

Either way, the remarkable success of the RE4 reboot makes one thing abundantly clear, this legendary survival horror series is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

As it enters its 30s, the franchise’s enduring legacy continues reigning supreme as an untouchable titan of the gaming industry.
