  • Resident Evil 4 Remake surpasses 8 million copies sold.
  • Capcom thanks fans with commemorative artwork.
  • Game still trails behind other top-selling Resident Evil titles.

Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Remake, has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 8 million copies sold worldwide.

This achievement comes approximately 19 months after the game’s initial release, showcasing its enduring popularity among fans and newcomers alike.

The remake, which launched on March 24th 2023 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, has been widely praised for its modernised gameplay and enhanced visuals while maintaining the essence of the original.

Subsequent releases for Mac, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPad in December 2023 have contributed to its ongoing success.

The following March (this year) it hit the 7M mark in terms of sales, but now that has been beaten with the horror title now hitting 8M in sales.

Capcom expressed gratitude to fans via their official social media channels, sharing a commemorative artwork featuring protagonists Leon Kennedy and Ashley Graham in a casual setting.

The developer stated:

“To you, the 8 million-plus agents, thank you from the bottom of our hearts,”.

Comparison to Franchise Titans

Despite this impressive feat, Resident Evil 4 Remake still trails behind some of its predecessors in the franchise’s sales rankings:

  1. Resident Evil 5 – 14.8 million
  2. Resident Evil 2 Remake – 14.2 million
  3. Resident Evil 7 – ~14 million
  4. Original Resident Evil 4 (2005) – 13+ million

The lower numbers for the RE4 remake suggest that single-player-focused games, though still immensely popular, may have a smaller ceiling in terms of mass-market appeal.

The remake’s success has reignited discussions about potential future projects within the Resident Evil series.

Fans have expressed interest in remakes of other classic titles, such as Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 5, though Capcom has not made any official announcements regarding upcoming remakes.

The company is instead concentrating on the next instalment which will be Resident Evil 9, and that has been confirmed to be in active development.

This sales milestone reinforces the viability of single-player experiences in the current gaming market, contrasting with industry trends towards multiplayer and live service games.

It also highlights Capcom’s recent string of successes, with the company poised to continue this momentum with the upcoming release of Monster Hunter: Wilds on February 28th 2025.

As the Resident Evil franchise approaches its 30th anniversary, the success of RE4 Remake demonstrates the enduring appeal of the series and Capcom’s ability to reimagine classic titles for modern audiences.

There’s no doubt that this achievement solidifies Resident Evil 4’s place as a standout entry in the renowned survival horror franchise.
