Square Enix has taken fans by surprise with the release of the Final Fantasy XVI Complete Edition for the PlayStation 5. This comprehensive package brings together the base game and its two expansions, offering players the full Valisthean experience in one convenient bundle.
The Complete Edition includes the critically acclaimed base game, which marked a bold departure for the series with its medieval fantasy setting and action-oriented combat system.
Helmed by combat designer Ryota Suzuki, the game’s real-time battle mechanics immersed players in a darker, more violent interpretation of the Final Fantasy universe.
Expanded Content and Pricing
Alongside the main game, the bundle features two substantial downloadable content packs: “Echoes of the Fallen” and “The Rising Tide“. These expansions have been praised for enriching the game’s narrative and expanding its innovative combat system through the introduction of additional Eikons.
What’s even better, is the fact that Square Enix has also announced a permanent price reduction for the standard version of Final Fantasy XVI.
The base game is now available for £49.99, while the Complete Edition is priced at £64.99, in line with current-generation pricing standards. The Complete Edition also comes with a selection of bonus content, including:
- Buster Sword
- Curtana
- Brave Blade
- “Away (1987)” Orchestrion Roll
- “Torn from the Heavens” Orchestrion Roll
- “Through the Maelstrom” Orchestrion Roll
As part of the version 1.34 update, PS5 players who install the Complete Edition can now claim the exclusive Brave Blade weapon, a special reward that grants increased stats for early to mid-game combat. The Brave Blade was added as part of Square Enix’s ongoing updates to reward players who continued to engage with the game after launch.
You will not acquire this new weapon unless you update to the latest version, which is advised.
DLC Development and PC Release
Interestingly, Square Enix had initially stated that DLC was not planned for Final Fantasy XVI.
However, the positive reception to “Echoes of the Fallen” and “The Rising Tide” seems to have justified their development.
According to a developer interview, the overwhelming fan engagement with the game’s Eikon system and narrative led the team to reconsider its approach. The expansions introduce entirely new regions of Valisthea, focusing on the fallout of the Eikon battles, giving players new areas to explore and deeper lore to uncover.
This post-launch pivot towards DLC content shows how fan reception can directly influence a game’s development trajectory.
Following the release of these expansions, the team shifted its focus to the PC version of the game, which launched on September 17th.
While Final Fantasy 16 received critical acclaim, it reportedly fell short of Square Enix’s sales expectations.

The game’s recent PC release, offering enhanced optimisation options and mod support, may help to extend its lifespan and reach a broader audience.
With the Complete Edition now available on both PS5 and PC, speculation has begun about the future of the iconic franchise.
Fans are eager for news about potential PC ports of other titles, such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and are already curious about the prospects of Final Fantasy XVII.
Although, given the trend of mainline Final Fantasy titles releasing once per console generation, it may be some time before we hear concrete news about the next instalment.
In the meantime, the Complete Edition offers both newcomers and long-time fans the perfect opportunity to experience the rich world of Valisthea in its entirety.
Whether you’re drawn to the game’s innovative combat system, its mature storytelling, or simply the allure of a new Final Fantasy adventure, the Complete Edition presents an enticing package for PlayStation 5 owners.
As the realm of Valisthea continues to expand, now is the ideal time to dive into this epic tale of crystals, Eikons, and the fate of a troubled world.
