Gamers Select the Top 30 PlayStation Games of All Time
Celebrating three decades of gaming excellence, PlayStation marked its 30th anniversary with a nostalgic poll conducted by Famitsu, a respected Japanese gaming publication.
The poll featured over 4,000 votes and sought to determine the greatest PlayStation games ever, across all generations of the iconic console.
X user GameDataLibrary was the first to spot this on December 6th and credited Famitsu with the list.
A Journey Through PlayStation’s Legacy
Launched in Japan on December 3rd, 1994, the original PlayStation changed the gaming landscape forever.
To commemorate the milestone, Sony introduced celebratory content like 30th-anniversary PS5 themes, evoking memories of past generations with wallpapers and sound effects.
Famitsu’s poll results reflect PlayStation’s storied legacy, with classic JRPGs like Final Fantasy 7, Dragon Quest 8, and Suikoden 2 dominating the rankings.
The PS1 contributed 16 out of the 30 games listed, further cementing its status as the foundation of PlayStation’s success.
Final Fantasy 7: An Undisputed Champion
Topping the list is Final Fantasy 7, often regarded as the crown jewel of JRPGs.
Its memorable characters, groundbreaking visuals, and deep storyline resonated with fans globally, making it a fitting choice for the number one spot.
Square Enix’s dominance is evident, with eight titles in the rankings.
Final Fantasy 10 secured fourth place, while Kingdom Hearts 2 and Dragon Quest 8 also earned well-deserved recognition.

The poll produced some unexpected results. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G claimed the second spot, underscoring the franchise’s immense popularity in Japan.
Two additional Monster Hunter titles—Portable 3rd (6th) and World (12th)—further showcased its cultural impact.
Another standout was the limited representation of newer consoles. The PS5 and PS Vita had no entries, while the PS3 and PS4 only managed one and two spots, respectively, with The Last of Us (29th) and Ghost of Tsushima (30th) representing their platforms.

While Famitsu’s list primarily reflects the preferences of Japanese gamers, it’s a testament to the enduring influence of the PlayStation brand.
Iconic titles like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and Gran Turismo continue to captivate players across generations.
Since its inception, we can only imagine what the next five or ten years will bring for Sony’s console.
Future anniversaries might see modern classics like God of War Ragnarök or Final Fantasy XVI claim their places among the all-time greats.
FF16 has been hugely successful in Japan, with it becoming the best retail launch for a PS5 game ever in the country last year.
Until then, the PS1 remains the champion, reminding us of the golden age of gaming it helped define.
