Key Highlights:

  • State of Decay 3 is reportedly targeting an early 2026 release.
  • Windows Central journalist Jez Corden suggests the game is further along in development than expected.
  • Undead Labs is receiving development support from The Coalition and Obsidian Entertainment.

State of Decay 3, the upcoming open-world zombie survival game, could be released in early 2026, according to reports from Windows Central’s Jez Corden.

Initially announced in 2020, the game has faced multiple development challenges, including delays and a transition to Unreal Engine.

While Microsoft had originally considered a 2025 launch, Corden suggests that it has now been pushed back, with early 2026 looking like the more probable window.

During a recent Xbox Two podcast episode, Corden shared his insights, stating that the game is “closer to being finished than you’d think.”

He even expressed confidence in his prediction by stating he would “bet money” on a 2026 launch.

Given that State of Decay 3 received a new trailer at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase after years of silence, it is plausible that Microsoft is preparing for a release within the next two years.

What This Means for the Game’s Development

The development of State of Decay 3 is not solely in the hands of Undead Labs. Reports indicate that both The Coalition and Obsidian Entertainment have contributed to the game’s development.

Their involvement has reportedly focused on refining combat mechanics, enemy AI behaviours, and animation quality.

This cross-studio collaboration could be an indicator of a more polished experience at launch.

Notably, The Coalition’s expertise in Unreal Engine 5 demonstrated in Gears of War: E-Day, suggests that State of Decay 3 may benefit from advanced rendering techniques and improved environmental destruction physics.

Meanwhile, Obsidian’s experience in crafting deep RPG systems could hint at a more narrative-driven experience compared to past entries.

While it remains unclear how many developers from The Coalition and Obsidian have been assisting, their contributions suggest a commitment to elevating the game’s mechanics beyond its predecessors.

Obsidian is currently working on The Outer Worlds 2 following the release of Avowed, while The Coalition is developing the previously mentioned Gears of War: E-Day, making their involvement in State of Decay 3 particularly noteworthy.

Will We See More at the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase?

Despite the lack of an official release date, many fans are expecting more news at the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase in June.

Given Microsoft’s past marketing strategies, a more detailed look at State of Decay 3 could be on the horizon.

If an early 2026 release is indeed planned, showcasing additional gameplay footage and revealing core mechanics would make sense at this stage of development.

One of the biggest questions surrounding this upcoming entry is whether it will include fully-fledged co-op features at launch. While previous games in the series supported multiplayer, they were often limited in scope.

A more seamless co-op experience, akin to games like Dying Light 2 or Redfall, would significantly increase its longevity and appeal.

With 2025 and 2026 shaping up to be significant years for Xbox first-party releases, State of Decay 3 has the potential to be a major title for the platform.

Whether or not Undead Labs meets this projected timeline remains to be seen, but the latest updates suggest the game is progressing well.
