Sony Confirms Next State of Play Focused on Japanese and Asian Developers

Sony has officially announced the next PlayStation State of Play, and it’s arriving sooner than expected. The broadcast will air on November 11 at 2pm PT (10pm UK time), running for around 40 minutes. This edition has been branded State of Play Japan and will focus exclusively on games developed in Japan and across Asia. It’s a smart shift in focus that highlights how much creative talent comes out of the region, and if past showcases are any indication, this one could deliver several surprises.

Sony hasn’t provided a list of featured games this time around, which makes the announcement more intriguing than usual. The show will include both indie and AAA titles, with interviews and fresh looks at upcoming releases. It’ll be hosted by well-known voice actor Yuki Kaji, best known for voicing Todoroki in My Hero Academia, and the presentation will be in Japanese with full English subtitles.

What’s especially interesting here is the framing. By calling it State of Play Japan, Sony is setting the expectation that this won’t be a typical global showcase. Instead, it’s leaning into its regional identity, similar to how Nintendo occasionally dedicates a Direct entirely to Japanese studios. For fans of games like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, or Street Fighter, that’s a promising sign. Capcom and Square Enix are both headquartered in Japan and have several major titles in development, many are hoping for updates on Resident Evil Requiem, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, or even something new from PlatinumGames.

There’s also growing chatter about Where Winds Meet, an upcoming PS5-exclusive action RPG from Chinese developer Everstone Studio, and Phantom Blade Zero, which debuted at a previous State of Play and has since gone quiet. Meanwhile, smaller titles like Petit Planet, the new life sim from the team behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, could easily make an appearance. And with Marvel’s Wolverine getting a PlayStation Store wishlist listing, that’s another strong candidate for the lineup.

I’ve seen a lot of speculation around whether we might get another look at the Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC before its early 2026 launch window. If Bandai Namco decides to drop a new trailer here, it would make perfect sense given the event’s theme and timing. Personally, I’d love to see an update on the Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag Remake, a long-requested project that’s become almost mythical at this point, but I think it’s safer to expect something grounded in the current generation.

Regardless, this showcase feels like a meaningful reset for PlayStation. After a quiet autumn, focusing on Japanese developers is a good reminder of how deep the brand’s roots run in that part of the industry. If Sony can deliver a mix of anticipated sequels, unexpected reveals, and a few niche gems, State of Play Japan could end up being one of the strongest showcases of the year.
