Key Highlights:

  • PlayStation’s next State of Play takes place September 3.
  • The showcase is dedicated to 007 First Light from IO Interactive.
  • Over 30 minutes of gameplay featuring Bond’s first MI6 mission.

Sony has confirmed that its next State of Play broadcast will be held on September 3rd, and this one is entirely focused on 007 First Light. IO Interactive’s James Bond project has been under wraps since its reveal trailer earlier this summer, but this will be the first chance to see extended gameplay.

As detailed in the latest PlayStation Blog, the broadcast begins at 11am PT / 7pm BST / 8pm CEST and runs for over half an hour. IO Interactive will walk viewers through Bond’s very first mission as an MI6 recruit, showcasing a mix of high-speed driving, stealth, and gunplay.

For anyone unfamiliar, this is the first James Bond game in fourteen years since 007 Legends, and that gap alone makes it noteworthy.

I’ve seen IO’s design philosophy evolve across the Hitman series, and their ability to combine systems-driven stealth with cinematic flair is exactly why this project feels promising.

What I’ll be looking for in the deep dive is how much freedom they give the player. Will it be as open-ended as Hitman, or closer to a tightly scripted action thriller? That balance will define how 007 First Light stands apart.

It’s been confirmed to be a live-service title like Hitman, with new missions added post-launch.

While some fans were hoping for updates on other PlayStation exclusives like Marvel’s Wolverine or Little Nightmares 3, Sony has been clear that this is a Bond-only show. That might disappoint some, but if you think about PlayStation’s broader calendar, it makes sense.

Ghost of Yotei is already slated for October, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will get its spotlight at Tokyo Game Show later in the month. This frees up the State of Play to give Bond the attention it deserves.

Yann Roskell, Senior Global Communication Manager at IO, confirmed that the stream will not only show gameplay but also feature insights from the team afterwards. That suggests we might get hints at design philosophy or narrative direction, even if the studio keeps the release date and Bond’s casting under wraps.

IO has said before that it wants players to care about the game itself before the face behind the character, and I think that’s a smart call.

007 First Light has a lot to prove, but this showcase feels like the real unveiling. It is not just about seeing Bond drive a car or sneak through a compound, it is about understanding how IO’s pedigree in stealth translates into the world’s most iconic spy.
