Marvel’s Wolverine Development Continues As Insomniac Maintains Media Blackout

Wolverine shows his claws

Key Highlights:

  • Insomniac confirms Marvel’s Wolverine is still in development, but with no timeline in sight.
  • Studio responds to fan impatience, reiterating its stance on controlled communication.
  • 2023 data breach and other Sony projects may explain the prolonged silence.

Four years have passed since Marvel’s Wolverine was first teased by Insomniac Games, and the silence since has been testing the patience of eager fans.

While the studio has reiterated that development is ongoing, the latest response offers little more than a firm reminder: updates will come only when the team is ready.

Responding to a critical fan on Twitter/X, Insomniac clarified that Marvel’s Wolverine is actively in development for PlayStation 5.

However, they added that details will only be shared “when we are ready.” The studio cited resource management, timing, and approval processes as reasons for the continued radio silence.

This isn’t the first time the developer has fielded questions about the game’s progress.

Similar statements were made as far back as May 2024, and the messaging remains unchanged: Marvel’s Wolverine exists, but don’t expect a flood of updates just yet.

As the minds behind the Spider-Man seriesRatchet & Clank, and Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac is no stranger to delivering high-quality experiences.

Fans, knowing this, are understandably anxious for any hint of Wolverine’s gameplay, tone, or release window.

But those expectations come with complications. Game development takes time, and the pressure to share unfinished material can lead to unwanted leaks, misinterpretations, or marketing decisions that backfire.

Fallout From the 2023 Hack

One reason for the lack of updates may trace back to the serious data breach Insomniac suffered in 2023.

A ransomware attack exposed internal documents, employee details, and even an early build of Marvel’s Wolverine.

The studio described the incident as “extremely distressing,” and it may have forced Insomniac to recalibrate both its internal workflow and communication strategy.

Whether or not the leak delayed development directly, it certainly impacted the environment in which the game is being made.

The pressure to recover, protect staff, and prevent future damage could explain the continued caution in releasing information.

Timing is everything in gaming. Sony already has Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Tsushima follow-up Ghost of Yotei lined up for 2025. Releasing Marvel’s Wolverine marketing too soon might undercut other high-profile launches.

This strategic planning may push the X-Men Superhero’s showcase into late 2025 or even 2026, perhaps timed for a PlayStation Showcase or The Game Awards.

If so, Marvel’s Wolverine could represent Insomniac’s longest gap between titles in the studio’s modern history.

While the lack of new footage, trailers, or screenshots is frustrating for fans, Insomniac’s commitment to quality and timing shows a studio trying to maintain creative control under tight scrutiny.

If Marvel’s Wolverine follows the studio’s proven formula, it will likely be worth the wait.

Until then, the message remains consistent: it’s coming, but only when it’s ready.
