Wartales has been quietly building one of the strongest post-launch support cadences in the tactics RPG space, and Shiro Games is extending that run with a new expansion called The Curse of Rigel. The update shifts the game into darker territory, trading sweeping warfare for creeping folk horror inside a warped woodland valley.

Set in a remote district of Alazar, Rigel invites players into a sheltered land where the sun struggles to reach the floor. Stories from locals paint its forest, the Weald, as a place that swallows those who step off the path.

Trails bend themselves, time slips, and survivors return changed. As disappearances grow, the crown has already sent knights to investigate. Players arrive as yet another mercenary company contracted to push deeper and confront whatever is poisoning the land.

Rigel itself is framed as the heart of the experience. Light is scarce, and your lantern matters. It cuts through the haze and reveals signs of corruption, but neglect it and your party begins to fray. Companions glimpse movement just beyond their sight and the game leans into sanity and perception as pressure points. The usual Wartales loop of pushing a little further for resources becomes riskier when your squad’s stability is at stake.

Combat introduces enemies shaped by the forest. The corrupted are described as once-human figures now part of the Weald, their presence felt in the landscape as much as on the battlefield. Surviving an encounter is not the end either. Soldiers can return to camp with grafts, fragments of forest power that grant new abilities at the cost of creeping influence. The expansion raises a thematic question about how much blight a mercenary band is willing to carry for advantage.

Camp becomes more than a safe zone. The Curse of Rigel folds in research systems linked to the new corruption mechanic. Through alchemy and experimentation on these grafts, players can unlock long-term improvements for their company. It complements existing systems like professions and caravan building rather than replacing them, offering another tweakable layer for squad optimisation.

Alongside the paid DLC, every player receives the Thaumaturge class for free. Emerging from Alazar’s laboratories, the Thaumaturge specialises in battlefield control. They wield fumes and volatile vials to empower allies and weaken threats, sometimes inhaling their own brews to push their output at personal cost.

It fits the expansion’s theme of trading safety for power and gives support-oriented players something new to experiment with even if they do not buy Rigel.

The Curse of Rigel follows Shiro’s pattern of expansions reshaping how its world plays. Earlier content dragged players to archipelagos and warfronts. This time the scale tightens. One valley, one haunted forest, and a campaign built around pressure and corruption rather than territory control. As someone who trekked across Belerion and Ormance, this pivot toward folk horror feels fresh and suitably uncomfortable.

The DLC slots cleanly into existing save files across PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X|S. Veteran bands can march straight in, treating Rigel like any other region. Shiro Games confirms a December 11th release date, accompanied by an announcement trailer showcasing suffocating mists, twisted silhouettes, and the fragile glow of a lantern cutting through the dark.
