Key Highlights:

  • The Phantom Pain was revealed at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards under the mysterious Moby Dick Studio name.
  • Fans quickly spotted clues suggesting the game was secretly connected to Metal Gear Solid and Hideo Kojima.
  • The speculation proved correct when Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was officially revealed in March 2013.

A mysterious game called The Phantom Pain made its debut at the 2012 Spike Video Game Awards, immediately prompting speculation that Hideo Kojima was secretly teasing the next Metal Gear Solid game.

The trailer was presented as a new project from Moby Dick Studio, an apparently unknown Swedish developer led by a man named Joakim Mogren. However, several details quickly raised questions about the studio and the true identity of the game.

The injured protagonist shown in the footage strongly resembled Big Boss, while the game’s visuals appeared similar to those produced by Kojima Productions’ FOX Engine. Fans also discovered that gaps within The Phantom Pain logo could be interpreted as spelling out “Metal Gear Solid V”.

Even the name Joakim attracted attention because it could be rearranged as an anagram of Kojima.

At the time, none of this amounted to official confirmation. The Phantom Pain was still publicly presented as a separate game from Moby Dick Studio, making the connection to Metal Gear Solid speculation rather than an announced fact.

That speculation ultimately proved correct.

On 27 March 2013, Hideo Kojima confirmed at the Game Developers Conference that The Phantom Pain was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, which had already been revealed separately in 2012, would serve as a prologue to the main game.

The Phantom Pain eventually launched on 1 September 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

The finished game also brought a significant change to the role of Big Boss. Kiefer Sutherland provided the English voice and facial performance for the character, replacing long-time Snake voice actor David Hayter.

Looking back, the VGA 2012 reveal was therefore not the formal announcement of Metal Gear Solid V, as initially suspected. It was instead an elaborate teaser designed to hide the game’s identity behind Moby Dick Studio and The Phantom Pain, while leaving enough clues for Metal Gear fans to uncover the connection months before Kojima officially confirmed it.
