If you’re new to Skater XL or you’ve been skating for years but never modded before, this guide will take you through everything you need. I’ll show you how to set up the right version of the game, install Unity Mod Manager, and add the most popular community mods. By the end, you’ll be skating on custom maps, rocking new decks, and fine-tuning your stats like a pro.

Understanding Skater XL Mods

Skater XL mods are fan-made add-ons that expand the game far beyond what’s possible in the vanilla version. They include everything from physics tweaks and realistic camera controls to new skateparks, decks, shoes, and visual filters. Some of the best known mods include:

  • DogVinci’s Stats Menu – Gives you total control over gravity, pop force, and flip speed.
  • Froze’s Walking Mod – Lets you get off your board and explore maps on foot.
  • BoneDolly Mod – Adds new trick mechanics and animation controls.
  • XLMenuMod – Overhauls the interface for easier navigation and file management.

The key to successful modding is knowing which version of Skater XL you’re running. That determines what mods will work.

Step 1: Check Your Game Version

Before installing anything, launch Skater XL and look at the bottom-left corner of the main menu. You’ll see a version number such as 1.2.10.4 – this is the current public release on PC. While it’s the newest version, it isn’t always the best one for modding.

To unlock more compatible mods, it’s worth switching to the Alpha Branch, which offers wider mod support.

To switch to the Alpha Branch:

  1. Right-click Skater XL in your Steam Library.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Betas tab.
  4. From the drop-down menu, choose Alpha Branch.
  5. Close the window and let Steam update the game automatically.

This change gives you access to more mods and tools that aren’t supported on the public branch.

Step 2: Install Unity Mod Manager

Unity Mod Manager (UMM) is the backbone of Skater XL modding. It manages and injects mods into the game safely without touching core files.

You can download it from NexusMods (search “Unity Mod Manager Skater XL”). Make sure you’re logged into a Nexus account before downloading.

Once you’ve downloaded the ZIP file, extract it to your desktop. Open the folder and look for the UnityModManager.exe file, this is the application you’ll be using.

Here’s the setup process summarised:

StepInstructions
1Open UnityModManager.exe
2In the “Game” dropdown, select SkaterXL (for public branch) or SkaterXL 1.2.2.8 (for Alpha Branch)
3Click Browse and locate your game folder (usually: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skater XL)
4Click OK once selected
5Press Install at the top of the application
6Wait until the status says “Installed Successfully

If both your current version and in-game version match, the install worked correctly.

Step 3: Download and Add Mods

Now comes the fun part, installing the actual mods. Each mod is downloaded as a ZIP file. Some are hosted on NexusMods, while others come from official Discord servers like DogVinci’s or Spe’s communities.

When you find a mod you like, always check its version number. For example, if your working mod list says the Stats Menu supports version 1.3.3, make sure you download that specific version. Mismatched versions are the main reason mods fail to load.

After downloading your chosen mods:

  1. Keep them zipped.
  2. Open Unity Mod Manager.
  3. Drag and drop the ZIPs into the main UMM window.
  4. If drag-and-drop doesn’t install them automatically, right-click each and choose Install manually.
  5. Make sure each one says Status: OK.

If you ever need to remove one, you can right-click and choose Uninstall.

Step 4: Launch Skater XL and Configure

Once everything says OK, start your game. You can now activate or adjust your mods from within Skater XL.

Press Backspace to open XLGraphics Mod, where you can fine-tune performance and visuals:

  • Set the game to Fullscreen.
  • Toggle VSync if needed.
  • Adjust Bloom, Motion Blur, Vignette, and Chromatic Aberration.

I usually turn all these effects down to make the visuals cleaner and sharper.

Switch to Follow Camera Mode, which gives a better third-person view. I find around 78 Field of View feels most natural. From there, tweak your Left/Right offsets until the camera trails perfectly behind your skater.

Step 5: Adjust Your Stats with DogVinci’s Mod

This is where the gameplay transforms. Press F7 to open the Stats Menu. You can adjust every physical parameter to make the skating feel realistic. My typical setup looks like this:

  • Gravity: –13
  • Pop Force: 3.25
  • High Pop Multiplier: 0.4
  • Turn Speed: 1.3
  • Max Velocity: 8–9
  • Flip Speed: 1.6
  • Scoop Speed: 1.4
  • Flip Mode: Simple
  • Catch Mode: Realistic

These values give the board heavier gravity and more responsive trick control. Once you’re happy, save your Stats, Stance, and Steeze presets under any name. This will create local folders in your Documents directory.

Step 6: Managing Presets and Files

Your new presets are stored in:

Documents > SkaterXL

You’ll find folders such as:

  • XLMod3 – for your saved stats and stance collections.
  • Maps – for downloaded maps.
  • Gear – for textures, decks, and clothing.
  • XLGearModifier – for custom meshes and accessories.

If you download other players’ presets, extract their ZIPs and place each file into the correct folder. Replace duplicates if prompted.

For example, to install someone else’s Stats file, drop it into XLMod3 > StatsCollections and replace your existing one if needed. You can then reload it in-game from the Preset tab by pressing P.

Step 7: Installing Maps and Custom Gear

Now you can expand your world. The Skater XL modding community constantly produces new environments and gear.

Installing Maps:

  1. Download the map ZIP (for example, Majestic Park Reservoir by Sashko).
  2. Extract it.
  3. Drop both the .map and .png files into your Documents > SkaterXL > Maps folder.

Installing Gear:

  1. Download your chosen gear ZIP (e.g., deck packs or shoes).
  2. Extract it.
  3. Move all gear textures or folders into Documents > SkaterXL > Gear.

If you want to organise them, you can create subfolders (e.g., “Mother Decks” or “Nike Shoes”).

Step 8: Using the XL Gear Modifier (XLGM)

For custom accessories and advanced gear editing, you’ll need the XL Gear Modifier Mod. Once installed, you’ll have an extra folder: Documents > SkaterXL > XLGearModifier > AssetPack

This is where you place mesh files for custom items.

Let’s say you downloaded a Swag Bag mesh from Spe’s Discord:

  1. Save the mesh (the plain white file).
  2. Then download its matching textures and normal map.
  3. Put the mesh in your AssetPack folder.
  4. Place the textures inside your Gear folder.

When you boot Skater XL, go to Edit Skater > Custom Meshes, and you’ll find your new item available. Add accessories, shoes, hats, or even backpacks, all handled through this mod.

Step 9: Testing Your Setup

Re-launch the game and give everything a spin. Load one of your custom maps, check that your gear textures display properly, and confirm that your stats feel right.

If anything looks off, go back to Unity Mod Manager and make sure your mod versions match your branch. The Alpha Branch typically supports the latest mod builds.

Step 10: Join the Skater XL Modding Community

The Skater XL community is one of the strongest parts of the experience. You’ll find modders and players constantly sharing new gear packs, map creations, and troubleshooting advice across spaces like Reddit’s r/SkaterXLMods, NexusMods, and Discord servers such as Spe’s for custom gear and DogVinci’s for script and physics tweaks. Dedicated map creators, including Sashko and Milky, also host their latest builds on community servers that are updated regularly.

Modding Skater XL can look intimidating at first, but once you understand how versions, branches, and Unity Mod Manager work, it’s simple. Whether you’re after smoother physics, fresh decks, or sprawling new parks, every part of the process builds on the last.

For me, the biggest improvement always comes from fine-tuning Stats and Camera settings, that’s where the game truly starts to feel alive.

Keep experimenting, back up your presets, and join the community. There’s always a new map, gear pack, or script dropping every month, and the creativity around this game never slows down.
