Key Highlights:

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition PS5 console covers sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening on July 28.
  • Both the standard PS5 and Digital Edition covers became unavailable through PlayStation Direct amid heavy demand.
  • The wider limited-edition range also includes a themed DualSense controller and full PS5 bundle, but availability differs between products and retailers.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition PS5 console covers sold out within minutes of pre-orders opening on July 28, with demand quickly overwhelming availability through PlayStation Direct and other retailers.

The covers are part of Sony’s wider Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hardware range and allow existing PS5 owners to add the symbiote-inspired design without buying a new console.

Both the standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition versions were listed as unavailable shortly after sales began, following a rush that also resulted in customers being placed into a virtual queue on PlayStation Direct.

The limited-edition hardware was announced one week earlier, with Sony confirming that the console covers, matching DualSense wireless controller and complete PS5 bundle would all be offered in limited quantities.

The red-and-black design represents the symbiote spreading across Spider-Man’s traditional colours, with black tendrils moving towards the white Spider-Man emblem on the front cover.

Sony is selling separate covers for both versions of the original PS5 design, making them particularly attractive to players who already own the console and only want the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 appearance.

A contemporary report from ComicBook recorded both sets of console covers as “currently unavailable” through PlayStation Direct shortly after pre-orders began. The store had also limited purchases to one set of covers per household.

Demand affected the other products in the range as well. The themed DualSense controller sold through its initial stock at several retailers, while resale listings for the controller, covers and complete console bundle appeared online at prices substantially above retail.

That does not mean every Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 product sold out everywhere at the same time. Availability varies between retailers and regions, and the complete console bundle remained obtainable through some stores after the separate covers had disappeared.

That’s important because the console covers appear to be the hardest part of the collection to secure on the opening day of pre-orders.

Sony plans to release the Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Limited Edition hardware on September 1, ahead of the game’s October 20 launch for PS5.

Later update: The separate Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 console covers remained particularly difficult to obtain after their initial July 28 sellout.

Restocks also sold through quickly, while the full PS5 bundle and limited-edition DualSense controller continued to appear at selected retailers.

The main shortage was therefore the standalone console covers, which let existing PS5 owners get the Spider-Man 2 design without buying another console.
