After leaving the Church, Leon and Ashley move towards the extraction point at Salazar’s Villa. Before crossing the bridge, a new Merchant Request appears that asks players to track and kill an infected hound known as the Colmillo.
This rabid pooch proves to be an aggressive foe, but taking it down nets some worthwhile rewards.
Important: Do not cross the bridge to Salazar’s Villa until this request is finished, as the quest becomes unavailable after that point.
Here’s how to complete Resident Evil 4 Remake A Savage Mutt.
Checking the Blue Request Note
While wholly optional, a Blue Request Note situated across from the Merchant shop hints at the objective here. The note mentions the sighting of a savage stray dog near the Village Chief’s Manor. This is the place where you successfully unlocked the combination lock a few chapters back.
Reading this isn’t essential, but it does provide helpful background details about the coming battle against the Colmillo beast. This marks the 8th Merchant Request overall while in Chapter 5 and is considered one of the more challenging tasks by the player base.
Gaining Access to the Village Chief’s Manor Attic
With Ashley now accompanying him, Leon can finally access a previously unreachable part of the Village Chief’s Manor called the attic. After exploring the upstairs bedroom, Leon boosts Ashley up to a collapsible ladder that she then lowers.
The attic itself contains some handy items like breakable crates and the fifth Clockwork Castellan. By far the most valuable item you will find will be the Antique Camera Treasure which is worth 10K Pesetas when sold. But more importantly, entering here triggers the Colmillo dog to appear just outside the Insignia Gate below. Consult the map above for the exact position marked with the location of your objective.
The Colmillo Dog Retreats to the Village Square
After fleeing from the Manor, the Colmillo soon reemerges filled with bloodthirsty rage. This time the savage beast heads toward the Village Square, forcing Leon to track it down for a climactic confrontation.
As expected, this large canine proves to be far mightier than standard Plague-infected dogs. It has significantly more health, deals heavy damage via vicious bites and tendril attacks, and aggressively dodges gunfire by swiftly moving side-to-side.
Leon’s go-to weapons here are the trusty Shotgun for inflicting wounds and Grenades for dealing big area damage whenever the Colmillo gets knocked down. Otherwise, carefully timing shots at the tendrils sprouting from its back works nicely for steadily whittling away health.
Flash Grenades are also kinda handy to temporarily stun the villagers that are lurking around and stop them from interfering in the mini boss battle.
If you purchased the Bolt Thrower from the Merchant for 10,000 Pesetas after Chapter 2, there’s an even easier way to defeat the huge mutt.
You may notice that there’s a very thin pathway between Leon and the dog; use this to your advantage with the following strategy. All you have to do is load your Bolt Thrower with attachable mines and shoot them at the ground in the narrow pathway. The enemy will blow up upon interaction with the mines and then you can approach the mutt whilst it’s hurt on the ground and inflict a quick stab with your knife.
Doing this four times will actually result in no damage being taken by Leon and your objective complete.
Rewards for Defeating the Rabid Colmillo
Once players finally put down this monster mutt for good, looting its body yields a valuable Alexandrite gemstone. Then upon visiting the Merchant afterwards, he transfers the main x8 Spinel reward promised by the Blue Request Note.
The Spinels help with upgrading gear, while the Alexandrite fetches a high selling price if cash is needed.
Advanced Strategy for S Plus and Cat Ears Runs
This RE4 Remake request is much tougher during ranking attempts because any damage, wasted ammo, or bad positioning can ruin the pace. I have tested a safer method that focuses on control, height advantage, and route planning rather than raw firepower. Before attempting, I highly recommend saving your game, as this is incredibly difficult and may take you a few attempts.
Players should clear the nearby villagers before climbing into the attic and triggering the spawn. Doing it after the event makes the fight far more chaotic, especially on repeat runs. Once the area is clear, fight from high ground wherever possible. Ladders and certain rooftops give Leon breathing room, and the Colmillo struggles to follow, so players can pick off threats with measured headshots.
Parasites are scripted to appear, so it helps to wait until at least three have revealed themselves before dealing with them. A Flash Grenade makes this step much cleaner, and I recommend bringing one along because it can save valuable ammunition. The double doors beside the Manor also act as a simple reset point if the enemy becomes too aggressive, allowing players to regroup and fire from safety.
This route takes longer and burns more resources, but it offers the highest chance of success during S Plus attempts or Cat Ears runs where consistency matters more than speed.
