Key Highlights:

  • ‘Erotica’ genre removed from Dead Rising’s photography mini-game.
  • Remaster retains other photo categories like horror and brutality.

Capcom’s upcoming Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is making headlines for a notable change to its photography mini-game.

The remastered version of the 2006 zombie survival game will no longer include the ‘Erotica’ category when players take in-game photographs, a decision that reflects changing societal attitudes since the original release.

In the original Dead Rising and its 2016 re-release, players could earn Prestige Points (PP) by taking photos across six different genres, including the controversial ‘Erotica’ category.

This category specifically rewarded players for taking suggestive photos of female characters or zombies.

The removal of this feature, first found in a Famitsu report, highlighted by Eurogamer, signifies a shift in game design philosophy and sensitivity to gender representation in video games.

While the ‘Erotica’ category has been removed, other photo genres such as horror, brutality, and outtakes remain intact.

These categories still allow players to earn PP by capturing gory, violent, or humorous scenes within the game.

The change raises questions about how certain side missions that previously required ‘Erotica’ photos will be altered to accommodate this removal.

Despite this change, Capcom has made significant efforts to improve other aspects of the title. The Deluxe Remaster boasts enhanced survivor AI, making escort missions less frustrating, and introduces a new control scheme that allows players to move while aiming.

Additionally, the remaster features fully voiced NPCs, improved lighting, the original soundtrack and enhanced facial expressions, aiming to modernise the classic zombie-slaying experience.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is scheduled for digital release on September 19th, with a physical release following on November 8th.

The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, offering both a standard edition and a Digital Deluxe edition that includes additional costumes and music tracks.

This change in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster reflects a broader trend in the gaming industry towards more inclusive and less objectifying content, particularly in how women are portrayed in video games.

It will also make the character of Frank West much more likeable in his new-found respect for women.

While Capcom has not officially commented on the reasons behind this specific change thus far, it’s likely a response to evolving player expectations and societal norms in the 17 years since the original game’s release.
