The Zipline Rope Gun in Sons of the Forest is a crucial tool for zipping through the wilderness, and it’s a key prerequisite to acquiring the Shovel. Hidden deep inside a cave on the western side of the island, the path to it is treacherous, filled with cannibals, mutants, and challenging terrain. But fear not, this guide will walk you through every step to ensure you’re well-prepared to navigate the cave and claim the Rope Gun.

Preparation Before Entering the Cave
Before venturing into the dangerous cave, you’ll need to gear up. Cannibals and mutants roam within, and the journey is long. Bring plenty of food, meds, and a light source like a flashlight or torch. A powerful weapon, such as a Stun Baton or a gun, is essential to survive the hostile cave inhabitants. Alternatively, if combat isn’t your thing, switching to Peaceful Mode will allow you to explore without enemy threats.
Cave Location and Entrance
The cave housing the Rope Gun is located between the ocean and the snowy mountains on the island’s western side. Look for a rocky area where water streams converge. Once you find the cave, clear the wooden boards blocking the entrance, then squeeze through the crack in the large rock face.
Tip: Use your GPS map to locate the cave entrance or refer to interactive maps for precise guidance.
Navigating the Cave
Upon entering, the cave quickly lives up to its reputation. After a few steps, you’ll come across a dimly lit area populated by cannibals and Baby Cannibals. Take them out swiftly and continue onward. Collect items like Cloth, Watches, and Canned Food from the skeletons scattered around, then proceed deeper into the cave by following the path to the right.
Exploring the Cavern
As you continue, the cave will open up into a large, mutant-infested area. You’ll notice three paths, ignore the right path for now, as it leads to a piece of the Artifact and the Cross. Instead, focus on the left path, where you’ll eventually find the Zipline Rope Gun.
Note: If you want to explore the Artifact and Cross, feel free to do so before heading to the Rope Gun.
Path to the Zipline Rope Gun
As you take the left path, keep an eye out for fallen workers. Near one of the bodies, you’ll find Sticky Bombs. These will come in handy, as a blob-like creature blocks your path ahead. Toss a Sticky Bomb at the Sluggy to clear the way.
Mutant-Infested Area
After blowing up the obstacle, proceed forward into a more open section of the cave. This area is crawling with mutants, so be prepared for a fight. Take them out, then gather valuable items like Rope, Meds, and the “More Lighting” email from a worker’s body near the right side of the cave. Continue through the next section, where you’ll encounter more hanging skeletons and a low-ceilinged area filled with babies.
Tip: Watch for bodies on the ground as you pass through the tight spaces, some have useful loot such as Flares, Canned Food, and Money.
The Final Stretch
After making your way through the narrow corridors, you’ll arrive at a split in the path. Head left at this fork and continue walking until you reach a small gap in the wall. Crouch and crawl through it, hugging the wall to your right until you see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Keep moving forward, and you’ll eventually reach a ledge. At this spot, you’ll find the Rope Gun inside an open black crate, along with some 9mm Ammo and a Carbon Fiber Arrow in a nearby box.
Once you’ve collected the Rope Gun, you can use it immediately to zipline down to the ground below. From here, simply follow the path ahead, and you’ll soon find the cave exit.
Next Objective: The Shovel
With the Zipline Rope Gun now in your possession, you’re ready to proceed with your next objective, acquiring the Shovel. Keep in mind that the Rebreather is also required for the Shovel quest, so make sure you’ve collected that beforehand.
