The Rope Gun is a traversal tool in Sons of the Forest that lets you create ziplines between suitable anchor points and transport building materials across them.
You can collect it early in the progression route without obtaining another specialist tool first. The main challenge is getting through the large cave system and its mutants.
Where Is Rope Gun Cave?
Rope Gun Cave is on the western side of the island, between the coastline and the central snowy mountain.
The entrance is set into a rocky forest slope and covered by wooden boards. Break through the boards and squeeze through the opening to enter Cave B.
The cave contains several mutant types and is considerably longer than its entrance suggests. Bring a reliable light source, healing supplies and an explosive if you have one.
How to Get the Zipline Rope Gun
Follow the main passage until you reach the first large cavern.
Stay towards the left-hand route to continue towards the Rope Gun. A separate route on the right descends deeper into Cave B towards Artifact Piece C and eventually requires the Rebreather, so you do not need to follow it for the Rope Gun.
Continue along the left route until you reach a narrow passage blocked by a Sluggy.
The easiest way through is to use one of the Time Bombs found nearby or another explosive. I’d save an explosive specifically for this obstruction rather than spend ammunition trying to clear it another way.
Once the passage is open, continue through the cave. The route passes through several larger chambers containing Puffies, Fingers, Babies and other mutants before narrowing again deeper underground.
Tip: Watch for bodies on the ground as you pass through the tight spaces, some have useful loot such as Flares, Canned Food, and Money.
Keep following the main route until you eventually reach a T-junction. Take the left path and continue uphill.
From here, the route becomes much more direct. Follow the passage until you reach the illuminated ledge near a pre-existing zipline.
The Rope Gun is inside the open black case beside the ledge. Pick it up to add the tool permanently to your inventory.
After collecting it, use the nearby zipline to cross down towards the exit route. Follow the remaining passage until you return to the surface.
What Should You Do After Getting the Rope Gun?
The Rope Gun can create ziplines between compatible surfaces using Zipline Rope. These lines can carry the player as well as logs and stones, making them useful for both travel and base construction.
Its most important progression use is inside Shovel Cave, where a pre-existing zipline crosses the first major obstacle.
You will also need the Rebreather before you can complete that cave and collect the Shovel.
