Bethesda has officially confirmed that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is real, ending months of speculation driven by credible leaks and reports.

The studio dropped a teaser image across its social media channels showing a silhouetted warrior with the Roman numeral “IV” centred over an Oblivion gate, and revealed that a full livestream presentation is scheduled for April 22nd, 2025.

The stream will broadcast across YouTube and Twitch at 11:00 AM EST (4:00 PM BST), and is expected to provide a comprehensive first look at the upcoming remaster.

The remastered version is being developed in partnership with Virtuos, a studio known for handling high-profile remakes, with support from Bethesda’s internal teams.

According to past reports now validated by Bethesda’s announcement, the game has been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 to deliver modern visuals while retaining the heart of the 2006 classic.

Although technical specifics remain under wraps, the switch to a new engine suggests an ambitious visual overhaul, possibly introducing advanced lighting systems, enhanced asset fidelity, and rebuilt environments suited to contemporary hardware.

Oblivion’s return also marks a strategic expansion of Bethesda’s presence on Xbox and PC platforms.

The remaster is expected to launch as a day-one title on Game Pass, both for PC and Xbox, with inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate all but confirmed.

Whether it will be available to Standard Game Pass users or come to platforms like PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch remains uncertain.

Though, Bethesda’s messaging heavily leans into ecosystem exclusivity, hinting that this layest entry may serve as a flagship release for Microsoft’s subscription model in 2025.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion originally released in 2006 and is often credited with laying the groundwork for modern open-world RPGs, featuring emergent gameplay systems, a richly simulated world, and a narrative anchored by the Daedric threat of Mehrunes Dagon.

In the context of game preservation and generational storytelling, this remaster could bring one of Elder Scrolls’ most formative entries to a new audience.

The return of Oblivion also aligns with Bethesda’s strategy of revitalising its legacy catalogue, following the precedent set by the Skyrim Anniversary Edition.

While the teaser image revealed little beyond a warrior figure and a foreboding landscape, it does reinforce the visual tone Oblivion fans will recognise—crimson skies, fractured terrain, and the looming presence of an Oblivion gate.

These elements, combined with the use of Unreal Engine 5, signal a shift toward high-fidelity storytelling while remaining faithful to the visual motifs that defined the original.

From an industry perspective, this release has several implications.

Firstly, Virtuos’s involvement suggests a premium-quality production, echoing recent remakes like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered and Resident Evil 4 Remake.

Secondly, the decision to unveil via livestream rather than traditional press suggests a community-focused approach, capitalising on real-time feedback, social engagement, and cross-platform visibility.

Fans will likely find answers to lingering questions tomorrow as of this writing. Questions like will Oblivion Remastered feature updated mechanics or purely cosmetic changes? Will previously released expansions like Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine be bundled in? Could mod support be expanded beyond PC?

While many of these details remain speculation, the livestream promises to clarify Bethesda’s ambitions for the project.

Ultimately, Oblivion Remastered is more than a nostalgia play. It’s a foundational piece in Bethesda’s evolving portfolio and Microsoft’s long-term strategy to deepen the value of Game Pass through exclusive, high-recognition titles.

The timing of the announcement just ahead of mid-year showcases, suggests a coordinated PR push that could feed into further Elder Scrolls or Fallout news later in the year.

Expectations are high, and fans won’t have to wait long. The gates of Oblivion open again tomorrow.
