Key Highlights:

  • Ubisoft teases Splinter Cell activity ahead of Summer Game Fest and June showcases.
  • Sam Fisher image stirs speculation about long-delayed remake.
  • No official confirmation yet, but insider claims remake looks “genuinely impressive”.

After years of near silence, Ubisoft has stirred the Splinter Cell fanbase by releasing a cryptic image of Sam Fisher, fuelling speculation that a major announcement could be imminent.

The close-up shot, shared on Ubisoft’s official social media account on X/Twitter, shows the iconic operative from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, prompting questions about the timing and purpose behind the post.

While the publisher has yet to confirm any event-specific plans, the gaming calendar provides multiple high-visibility opportunities for a reveal.

With Summer Game Fest set for June 6th, an Xbox Games Showcase on June 8th, and rumours of a Nintendo Direct also swirling, the chances of a formal announcement are high.

There was a golden opportunity to reveal something at last years Ubisoft Forward event, but ultimately the publisher left fans in the dark and yearning for more.

Notably, the original Splinter Cell launched on Xbox in 2002, making Microsoft’s showcase a particularly logical venue for news.

The last mainline title, Splinter Cell Blacklist, was released in 2013.

Since then, Sam Fisher has made guest appearances in Rainbow Six Siege and has been featured in a BBC 4 audio drama called Firewall, yet no new game has materialised.

The remake of the original Splinter Cell was announced in 2021, to be built in Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine. But since that reveal, updates have been sparse.

Ubisoft’s use of a Chaos Theory image, rather than a new render, suggests one of two possibilities: either marketing is slowly building ahead of a reveal using recognisable franchise visuals, or the project’s current development state doesn’t yet allow for new assets to be shown.

Despite this, credible industry voices like Tom Henderson claim the remake “looks genuinely impressive,” suggesting substantial progress behind the scenes.

In the last major update shared in a report by IGN in 2022, Ubisoft Toronto stated that the Splinter Cell remake would remain faithful to the tone and structure of the original.

Creative director Chris Auty noted that the development team aimed to preserve the core experience while updating story elements and mechanics that may not have aged well.

This approach indicates a remake that balances nostalgia with refinement, aiming to satisfy long-time fans and modern players alike. Splinter Cell’s situation mirrors other long-gestating Ubisoft projects, such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake and Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Each of these titles has faced prolonged development timelines, fuelling concerns about internal prioritisation and production hurdles.

Yet Sam Fisher’s enduring popularity keeps Splinter Cell front-of-mind, especially in a market currently valuing stealth mechanics and tactical gameplay. Ubisoft recently revived interest in the franchise by adding new achievements to the previously mentioned Splinter Cell Blacklist on Steam, reinforcing the theory that momentum is building toward a bigger announcement.

Interestingly, a Ubisoft Milan job listing late last month showed us that the other iconic Ubisoft mascot Rayman will be making his return in a full fledged AAA title.

So the publisher can revive their icons when their attention is focused on them. In recent times, it seems Rayman and Sam Fisher who use to be the poster boys for Ubisoft, have been shoved to the side to make way for Assassin’s Creed, which is by far the most successful franchise under their umbrella of video game franchises.

The publisher appears to be quietly aligning community attention in preparation for a formal Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Remake reveal, using familiar characters and curated nostalgia as signals.

Until Ubisoft confirms a showcase or drops a proper trailer, fans will have to remain in suspense.

The timing of the teaser and industry scheduling align well, but without concrete details, the publisher’s intent remains speculative.

Nevertheless, with industry insiders expressing optimism and the fanbase growing increasingly vocal, Ubisoft may soon find that the only real stealth move left is staying silent.
