Sons of The Forest Complete Kelvin Companion Guide

Kelvin from Sons Of The Forest sitting down on the floor in a room

Key Highlights:

  • Kelvin is your first companion in Sons of the Forest, capable of performing non-combat tasks like gathering, building, and clearing areas.
  • He cannot fight but can warn of incoming threats, and must be manually revived if downed.
  • Kelvin can permanently die in single-player, but respawns in multiplayer after a delay.

Kelvin is the first AI companion you meet in Sons of the Forest, surviving the initial helicopter crash alongside you. Despite being injured and rendered deaf-mute, he becomes an indispensable support character thanks to his ability to gather resources, clear terrain, and assist with base-building.

His limitations are clear – he can’t fight, but his strengths lie in efficiency, passivity, and survival awareness.

Here’s everything you need to know about managing Kelvin in your playthrough.

Where to Find Kelvin and How to Recruit Him

Shortly after the crash, you’ll find Kelvin lying on the ground nearby. Approach him and interact to trigger a brief cutscene that brings him to his feet.

This unlocks his command interface, which you access via a notepad by pressing the interaction key.

How to Use Kelvin Effectively

Kelvin follows orders from a predefined list. You can direct him to:

  • Follow you
  • Get items (logs, sticks, rocks, or fish) and either drop themgive them to you, or carry them
  • Build basic structures, such as shelters or fires
  • Stay put or hide
  • Clear areas in a radius of 5, 10, or 20 metres
  • Take a break and remain idle

Of all available tasks, commanding Kelvin to collect fish provides the highest return.

He’ll crouch beside water sources and grab fish directly with no need for crafted tools, repeating the task until interrupted. This builds up a reserve of food quickly and efficiently, especially early on when other food sources are scarce.

His “Clear” function is another top-tier command. It lets him chop trees and remove obstacles, prepping large areas of land for base construction while simultaneously generating building materials.

However, this has drawbacks, Kelvin doesn’t distinguish between decorative trees and critical structures. If your treehouse is connected to a log he targets, expect it to come crashing down.

While he cannot be armed or trained to fight, Kelvin provides critical situational awareness.

If he detects enemies, he’ll run toward you and point to the threat. In open-world segments, this makes him useful as a lookout. Kelvin demonstrates natural survival instincts by avoiding particularly dangerous areas.

He will not follow players into cave systems, which keeps him safe from underground threats but leaves players to face these challenges alone.

For instance, when you tackle the cave on the western side of the island to grab the Zipline Rope Gun, your AI Companion will not follow you under any circumstances until you exit the cave. This behaviour reflects his programming to prioritise self-preservation while still providing maximum utility in safer environments.

Kelvin’s Behaviour, Vulnerabilities, and Updates

Kelvin will autonomously eat, sleep, and hydrate. You don’t need to manage his survival directly, he performs those tasks on his own schedule.

Players can provide him with different clothing options throughout the game, including blazers, hoodies, leather jackets, tactical gear, tuxedos, and pyjamas.

While purely cosmetic, these outfit changes add personalisation to the companion experience and demonstrate the depth of interaction available.

Though, he can be injured during combat or by environmental hazards. If he’s downed, walk over and revive him as you would a teammate in co-op mode.

There’s no visible health bar, instead relying on a damage accumulation system and sustained damage will eventually incapacitate him.

The revival process requires players to reach Kelvin quickly before enemies can inflict additional damage.

Once revived, Kelvin returns to full functionality without lasting penalties. However, players should monitor his safety during combat encounters to prevent repeated downings that could lead to permanent death.

In single-player, Kelvin’s death is permanent. Whether he’s killed by enemies or accidentally by the player, he won’t return unless you manipulate your save files.

In multiplayer, his death is temporary – he’ll eventually reappear to prevent griefing from ruining a session.

Here’s a summary of Kelvin’s capabilities and limits:

Post-Launch Improvements and Current State

Since Sons of the Forest entered Early Access in 2023, developers have addressed numerous issues with Kelvin’s behaviour through regular patches.

Early updates resolved problems with Kelvin destroying player-built structures by chopping down supporting trees, balanced his fishing abilities to prevent infinite food generation, and improved his pathfinding around base structures.

In particular Patch 05 enabled him to fill drying racks with fish, reset traps and stock log sheds.

Recent patches have enhanced Kelvin’s survivability by preventing him from walking into fires and improved his responsiveness to player commands.

These updates have transformed him from a occasionally problematic companion into a genuinely useful survival partner who enhances rather than hinders the gameplay experience.

Should You Keep Kelvin Around in SOTF?

Absolutely. While not mandatory, Kelvin dramatically reduces the early- and mid-game workload.

He streamlines base-building, food gathering, and general resource collection. If he becomes inconvenient, the “Take a break” command lets you park him out of the way, ensuring he’s around when you need him without getting caught in danger.

Players seeking a more combat-oriented companion can look to Virginia, a second recruitable character who joins later.

Unlike Kelvin, she can be armed and will help fight off enemies, but she doesn’t take commands.

Kelvin may not talk, fight, or follow you into caves, but in every other way, he earns his place in your survival strategy.
