How to Build Spiked Walls in Sons of the Forest

A player demonstrating the construction of spiked walls in a forest environment, featuring logs, stones, and crafting tools.

Key Highlights:

  • Build basic spiked walls with sharpened sticks and rocks placed behind defensive log walls.
  • Create advanced spiked walls by turning ramps into spike-covered kill zones with stair access.
  • Spiked walls punish cannibals, hold up against some mutants, and even damage careless players.

Defensive walls on their own will slow cannibals in Sons of The Forest, but spiked walls are where your base really starts to feel secure. They add a lethal barrier that punishes anything trying to push through. Done right, they’ll chew up raids before they ever reach your door.

basic spiked wall is built on top of a regular defensive log wall. Place sticks directly behind your wall, then chop the tips with an axe to turn them into sharpened spears. Each spike needs three rocks at the base to hold it steady. Do this while facing outward, so the spikes point away from your base. If you want two rows of spikes, place a simple log stand behind the wall and repeat the process, giving you a double layer of protection.

For an advanced spiked wall, think of it more as a ramp of death. Build a ramped frame from logs, cover it, and then drive sharpened sticks into the front face, creating multiple rows of angled spikes. A staircase at the back lets you climb and maintain it, while rocks packed into the structure keep everything from snapping under pressure. It’s resource heavy but far more intimidating to enemies.

In my own runs, I’ve seen just how effective these setups can be. Regular cannibals can’t cope with them, and even mutants struggle. Spikes shred anything that charges straight in, though you’ll still want to watch out for outliers that sometimes slip through. Reinforce with multiple layers if you want peace of mind.

We’ve covered all the best traps in the game, so if you haven’t checked that out, i’d highly recommend it.

A few tips from testing:

  • Spikes always angle based on your facing, so crouch or adjust position if you want sharper downward points.
  • Always finish with rocks. Without them, spikes break quickly.
  • Be careful working too close to finished spikes, they damage you as much as enemies.
  • Decorative touches like torches or skulls on spikes don’t just look good, they also help light up kill zones at night.

With spiked walls in place, you’ll quickly notice raids becoming far less stressful. They aren’t truly indestructible, but they buy you the time you need to fight back on your terms.
