Minecraft Rated For Nintendo Switch 2 Ahead Of Possible Announcement

Key Highlights:

  • Minecraft has been rated for Nintendo Switch 2 by the ESRB.
  • The listing suggests a native Switch 2 version could be announced soon.
  • Players can already use the original Switch edition through backwards compatibility.

A native version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be on the way after a new rating surfaced through the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

The listing specifically names Nintendo Switch 2 as a platform, indicating that Mojang may be preparing a dedicated version of the hugely popular sandbox game rather than relying solely on backwards compatibility with the original Nintendo Switch release.

ESRB Listing Points To Native Switch 2 Version

The newly discovered ESRB entry rates Minecraft as E10+ (Everyone 10+) for:

  • Fantasy violence
  • User interactions
  • In-game purchases

The description mirrors previous Minecraft ratings, mentioning combat against enemies such as zombies and skeletons using weapons and magical attacks.

While the listing does not include a release date, ESRB ratings typically appear relatively close to a game’s launch or official reveal, making an announcement seem increasingly likely.

Minecraft Already Works On Switch 2

Nintendo Switch 2 owners can currently play Minecraft through backwards compatibility using the existing Nintendo Switch version, which originally launched in 2018.

The game reportedly runs without major issues on Nintendo’s newer hardware and still includes access to the exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, featuring Nintendo-themed skins, music tracks and content.

However, a dedicated Switch 2 version could offer several improvements over the existing release.

What Could A Switch 2 Version Add?

Neither Mojang nor Nintendo has confirmed any new features, but a native Switch 2 version could potentially deliver improved performance, higher image quality, better frame rates, faster loading times, greater stability, and support for new Switch 2 hardware features.

One possibility is support for the Switch 2’s Joy-Con mouse functionality, although no details have been announced.

The timing of the ESRB listing is notable, arriving just before several major gaming events.

With Summer Game Fest beginning on June 5 and the Xbox Games Showcase taking place on June 7, there are multiple opportunities for Microsoft and Mojang to formally unveil the new version.

For now, neither company has publicly acknowledged the Switch 2 port, but the ESRB rating strongly suggests that a native version is in development and may be revealed in the near future.
