Valve has officially released the CS2 Season 5 update, ending the short break between Premier seasons with one of the game’s biggest competitive updates in recent memory. The patch introduces Cache to the Active Duty map pool for the first time in seven years, expands the Armoury with new community-created cosmetics, and significantly changes how C4 explosions behave during matches.
The update also refreshes community map rotations, delivers Source 2 engine improvements, and includes a wide range of quality of life fixes ahead of the new Premier season.
For competitive players, however, the redesigned bomb damage system is likely to have the biggest impact on how rounds are played.
Cache joins the Active Duty map pool as Overpass departs, marking another major shake-up for Premier. Although players have been able to practise on Cache since its return to Counter-Strike 2 earlier this year, it now officially becomes part of the competitive rotation.
Valve has also expanded the Armoury with the Arabesque and Spy Tech weapon collections, following last year’s Call to Arm-ory community initiative. Alongside them are the new Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing sticker collections, giving skin collectors and sticker crafters plenty of fresh cosmetic options.
Several older collections have now rotated out of the Armoury, continuing Valve’s approach of refreshing cosmetic rewards between Premier seasons.
The most significant gameplay change arrives through a complete overhaul of C4 explosion damage. Rather than applying damage instantly across the entire blast radius, explosions now generate a fast-moving shockwave that spreads outward from the bombsite. The wave weakens around corners and cannot pass directly through walls, making positioning and escape routes far more important during the closing moments of a round.
Another welcome addition is a health bar preview that shows whether a player is likely to survive the explosion from their current position. That removes much of the guesswork that previously relied on experience alone, helping players make quicker decisions about saving weapons or attempting late defuses.
I have seen even experienced Counter-Strike players occasionally misjudge bomb damage during tense rounds. Providing instant survival feedback should reduce avoidable mistakes while placing greater emphasis on positioning than memorising blast distances.
Beyond Premier, Valve has refreshed the community map rotation with Boulder, Fachwerk and Shelter joining Competitive, Casual and Deathmatch playlists, while Debris and El Dorado arrive in Wingman. These replace Warden, Stronghold, Alpine and Sanctum across the available game modes.
The update also upgrades Counter-Strike 2 to the latest version of Source 2. While Valve has not detailed specific graphical improvements, the patch includes better scoreboard performance, visual fixes, map adjustments and several scripting improvements for workshop creators.
