OpenRCT2 0.5.3 update makes RollerCoaster Tycoon easier to run on Linux

Key Highlights:

  • OpenRCT2 0.5.3 update now automatically detects RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and 2 Wine installations on Linux.
  • The release also introduces new coaster features, gameplay improvements and numerous bug fixes.
  • OpenRCT2 continues to modernise the classic theme park simulator with ongoing quality of life updates.

The latest OpenRCT2 0.5.3 update has made one of PC gaming’s most celebrated fan projects even more convenient for Linux players. The new release automatically detects RollerCoaster Tycoon and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 installations running through Wine, removing one of the manual setup steps previously required before launching the game engine.

As an open source reimplementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2, OpenRCT2 has spent more than a decade preserving and enhancing the original experience across modern operating systems. While players still need the original game files, the latest release streamlines the setup process for Linux users by locating compatible Wine installations automatically.

Beyond the Linux improvements, version 0.5.3 expands gameplay with additional track pieces for the inverted roller coaster, introduces a new cheat that disables grass growth, and delivers a broad selection of bug fixes covering rides, scenery, multiplayer and scenario editing.

The project also continues refining long-standing mechanics. Train modifications no longer reset lap counts when only a single train is operating, while several original game bugs affecting excitement ratings, scenery visibility and ride statistics have now been corrected.

I have always considered OpenRCT2 one of the best examples of community-led preservation. Rather than simply making an older game playable, it steadily improves the experience while respecting what made RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 a classic in the first place.

The release also highlights how active the project’s development remains more than twenty years after RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 first launched. Alongside new gameplay features, OpenRCT2 continues introducing practical improvements that make the game easier to install and maintain across modern hardware.

That philosophy has also inspired wider community projects built on OpenRCT2. One recent accessibility mod demonstrates how the engine’s open source foundations allow developers to create features that were never possible in the original release, including comprehensive keyboard navigation, screen reader support, coordinate-based navigation and audio feedback designed for blind and low vision players. Although developed separately from OpenRCT2 itself, projects like these showcase the flexibility the engine now provides for community innovation.
