It appears that fans may receive an update on Mortal Kombat 1 sooner than anticipated, as per a credible insider. After NetherRealm announced the end of support for MK11 in July 2021, rumours began circulating about the studio’s work on the next instalment, which was officially confirmed this February.

During a quarterly earnings call, a senior executive at Warner Bros Discovery unintentionally revealed that MK1 was in development, sparking a renewed buzz within the fighting game community about what the latest sequel will offer.

Following the unexpected announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, even co-creator Ed Boon chimed in with a playful quip before gradually disclosing details on which video game characters from other franchises won’t be making appearances as guest fighters and, most notably, when fans can anticipate an official announcement for this latest entry.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, NetherRealm may unveil more information about Mortal Kombat 1 earlier than anticipated, shedding light on the veil of secrecy surrounding the upcoming game.

All Will Be Revealed Next Month

After popular fighting game streamer Maximilian Dood expressed his desire for Mortal Kombat 1 to feature the same fast-paced gameplay as MK9, game developer Corden responded to his tweet on Twitter.

Corden hinted at a possible reveal by stating, “I think you’ll find out more next month.” Considering Corden’s track record of being a trustworthy source, it appears that a May announcement is probable, especially since there have been no indications of NetherRealm announcing Mortal Kombat 1 within the coming week.

NetherRealm would face a challenging time releasing a new fighting game in 2023 as Street Fighter 6 is scheduled to launch in June, and rumours strongly suggest Tekken 8 will also release in 2023. Moreover, Guilty Gear Strive and King of Fighters have confirmed expansion DLC in the pipeline, making 2023 a jam-packed year for fighting game fans.

With tough competition from other fighting games, NetherRealm will need to bring their A-game to stand out in 2023. However, Mortal Kombat has a dedicated fanbase and a reputation for gruesome fatalities and unique characters, so there’s no doubt that many will eagerly anticipate any new information about MK1.
