Sub-Zero is as iconic as Mortal Kombat gets. Known in this timeline as Kuai Liang, he stands as leader of the Lin Kuei and embodies cold precision. His finishers reflect that identity: controlled, methodical, and ruthless.
This guide covers all of his Mortal Kombat 1 finishers, complete with console inputs, range requirements, and practical cues so players can perform them reliably.
How to Perform Sub-Zero’s First Fatality in MK1 (Hairline Fracture)
Type: Any Range
- PlayStation: ➡️⬇️⬇️🔺
- Xbox: ➡️⬇️⬇️Y
- Nintendo Switch: ➡️⬇️⬇️X
Sub-Zero forms an ice spear and launches it through his opponent’s torso. He then snaps behind them with a spinning strike before the shard loops back and embeds itself in their skull. They slide down the frozen spike as Sub-Zero claims victory with icy calm.
How to Perform Sub-Zero’s Second Fatality in MK1 (Brain Freeze)
Type: Close to Sweep Range
- PlayStation: ➡️⬅️⬇️🅾️
- Xbox: ➡️⬅️⬇️B
- Nintendo Switch: ➡️⬅️⬇️A
This finisher summons a jagged ice crystal wall behind the opponent. Sub-Zero slams their head repeatedly into it, freezing their face to the surface before tearing it free. He shatters the head against the ice for a final brutalised finish.
How to Perform Sub-Zero’s Animality (Mammoth Mash)
Type: Sweep to Full Screen
- PlayStation, Xbox, Switch (Universal): ⬇️➡️⬇️➡️
A spectral mammoth charges across the arena, crushing the victim in a callback to Sub-Zero’s deeper ties to Netherrealm mysticism. It is a signature finisher worth mastering for spectacle value alone. For all other character animal finishers, see our MK1 Animality Guide using the hyperlink.
Important: Sub-Zero can also access seasonal finishers such as Winter, Halloween, and Thanksgiving Fatalities when unlocked.
