Two social media posts have fuelled speculation that Mortal Kombat 1 could bring Rain and Reptile back as returning characters.
Series co-creator Ed Boon provided the stronger of the two clues when he posted: “…the phone rings. It’s Vicky calling….”
Fans quickly connected the wording with “Vicki Waiting”, a Prince song containing the same telephone reference.
That association immediately raised theories about Rain. The purple-clad Edenian character was originally created as a tribute to Prince, with his name famously referencing Purple Rain.
Boon did not mention Rain directly, however, and the post does not confirm that he will appear in Mortal Kombat 1.
The possibility fits with Boon’s recent teasing of classic characters returning to NetherRealm’s new timeline. It also remains unclear whether any returning character being hinted at would join the Main Fighter roster or appear through the separate Kameo Fighter system.
Reptile speculation followed another social media post connected with an upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 trailer.
After Boon said another gameplay trailer was on the way, Warner Bros. Games community manager Cory Taylor responded that it was “gonna melt faces.”
No character was named, but fans interpreted the phrase as a possible reference to Reptile, whose acid attacks have long been capable of dissolving opponents.
Reptile has additional reason to attract attention because he was absent from Mortal Kombat 11’s playable roster. His potential return has consequently remained one of the more common roster requests surrounding Mortal Kombat 1.
I consider Boon’s Rain post the more convincing of the two theories. The connection between Rain and Prince gives “Vicki Waiting” a specific character relationship, whereas “melt faces” could simply describe the violence expected from a Mortal Kombat trailer.
Neither message should therefore be treated as confirmation.
NetherRealm has already confirmed that Kombat Kast will return for Mortal Kombat 1, giving the studio another opportunity to reveal characters and demonstrate gameplay before launch.
Until NetherRealm names Rain or Reptile directly, both remain plausible interpretations of deliberately ambiguous social media posts rather than confirmed additions to the roster.
