Prominent employees of the Mortal Kombat 1 universe are dropping substantial hints that a couple of classic characters from bygone MK showdowns might be resurrecting as playable combatants. The Mortal Kombat chronology may undergo a factory reset with Mortal Kombat 1, but that isn’t deterring a crowd of familiar faces from assembling for another carnival of gory, raw, no-holds-barred action. The likes of Liu Kang (now with added firepower), Scorpion and Sub-Zero (bromancing in the Lin Kuei clan) and the revamped royal sisters Kitana and Mileena are all set to turn heads and break bones.

Mortal Kombat 1: A Revived Roster with Familiar Faces

The timeline reworking of Mortal Kombat 1 presents a tantalising platter of fresh opportunities for re-imagining MK’s ensemble of diverse, intriguing characters. Naturally, fans have got their hopeful lists at the ready, betting on the horses they’d like to see at the starting gate of the new game. Co-creator of Mortal Kombat, the enigmatic Ed Boon, is adeptly fuelling these speculative fires, dropping veiled hints that old favourites might re-emerge in the fresh MK chronicle. They might be playing leading roles or be part of Mortal Kombat 1’s alternate Kameo Fighter crew.

Ed Boon MK 1 Rain Tease

Ed Boon, ever the cryptic scribe, lately sprinkled yet another mysterious Mortal Kombat 1 breadcrumb on Twitter, implying that Edenian Prince Rain, thirsty for revenge, could be thrown into the ring. This clue was typically Boon-esque, a tweet reading simply, “…the phone rings. It’s Vicky calling….” The internet sleuths in the comment section postulate that this may be a nod to legendary singer Prince’s “Vicki Waiting,” which could, in turn, hint at Rain. After all, the ninja is a cheeky tribute to the late music icon (consider his name and the ‘Purple Rain’ inspired attire).

Mortal Kombat 1: Is it Finally Time for Reptile’s Return?

Adding to the intrigue, Warner Bros. Games’ community manager Cory Taylor left his own enigmatic breadcrumb, piggybacking on a previous tweet by Ed Boon. Boon announced another gameplay trailer in the pipeline for Mortal Kombat 1, following its Summer Game Fest exhibition.

Taylor responded, cheekily retweeting, “it’s gonna melt faces.” While no particular character was named, the Mortal Kombat fandom think it could be a nod to Reptile’s signature acid attack. Reptile’s comeback has been eagerly awaited for Mortal Kombat 1, and he even got a mention in a recent unofficial leak. The green ninja is considered a villain in the franchise but is much loved by the fan-base.

Taylor’s tweet may serve as another smoke signal for Reptile’s highly anticipated return in Mortal Kombat 1, given his unfortunate absence in MK 11. It’s crucial to note, though, that no official stones have been laid just yet. Similarly, Boon’s Rain hint could just be his Twitter tomfoolery, which he is known to indulge in. However, fans may soon receive an official word confirming Rain and Reptile’s comeback during the imminent Kombat Kast livestream.
