A promotional video for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sparked speculation that Sony may have hinted at how Peter Parker eventually separates from the symbiote.
The video was created to promote the limited-edition Spider-Man 2 PS5 hardware first revealed in July.
Its design shows black symbiote tendrils spreading across the console towards the white Spider-Man emblem, reflecting the same struggle for control that Insomniac has established around Peter and the Black Suit.
The promotional sequence goes a step further.
As the symbiote begins taking over the console, a burst of electricity appears to strike it and force the black tendrils backwards.
That moment has led some viewers to connect the electricity with Miles Morales, whose bioelectric Venom abilities have already been established as one of his defining powers.
GamesRadar reported on the theory after fans began questioning whether the accompanying imagery and audio could represent an actual moment from Spider-Man 2 rather than something created solely for the hardware campaign.
There is enough evidence for the interpretation to be plausible, but not enough to treat it as a confirmed spoiler.
Insomniac has already established that Peter’s relationship with the symbiote will affect those closest to him. The July story trailer specifically showed the Black Suit changing Peter’s behaviour and putting strain on his relationships with Miles, Mary Jane and Harry.
Miles also has expanded bioelectric abilities in the sequel, giving the theory a mechanical basis rather than relying only on the colour of the electricity shown in the advert.
That still does not prove the PS5 promotional video is depicting a literal scene from the game.
PlayStation’s official hardware announcement explains that the console design represents the symbiote attempting to take over, with the remaining red portion showing resistance against it. Senior Art Director Jacinda Chew described the design as a constant struggle for dominance rather than identifying the electricity as a specific story event.
I think that makes the Miles theory interesting rather than definitive. The promotional imagery clearly echoes the game’s central symbiote conflict, but Sony could just as easily be using familiar visual language from Peter and Miles’ powers without recreating an exact plot beat.
The strongest conclusion before release is therefore that the video may be foreshadowing Miles’ involvement in Peter’s struggle with the symbiote, but neither Sony nor Insomniac has confirmed that interpretation.
Later update: The finished game confirms that Miles does play a major role in freeing Peter from the symbiote. After Peter nearly kills Kraven, Miles intervenes and fights him while trying to break through the symbiote’s influence.
Miles combines his bioelectric attacks with the symbiote’s weakness to sound, and Peter eventually regains control long enough to tear the suit from his body. The promotional video therefore pointed in broadly the right direction, although it did not literally reveal the full scene or how Peter’s separation from the symbiote would happen.
