Mortal Kombat 1 co-creator Ed Boon has teased a Quan Chi gameplay reveal at CCXP 2023, sharing a short video of the sorcerer confronting Shang Tsung ahead of the Brazilian convention.
The footage, posted by Boon on X on 30 November, features a pre-fight exchange between the two characters, accompanied by the message: “CCXP in Brazil should be fun.”
Boon is scheduled to appear at Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in São Paulo on Sunday, 3 December, making his presentation the likely setting for Quan Chi’s full gameplay reveal.
Although the teaser does not demonstrate Quan Chi’s combat abilities, it provides an early look at his appearance outside Mortal Kombat 1’s story mode.
The exchange with Shang Tsung also references their partnership in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, the 2002 instalment in which the two sorcerers formed the titular alliance.
It’s a fitting callback for Quan Chi, whose long history with Shang Tsung has made their rivalry and cooperation recurring parts of Mortal Kombat lore.
Quan Chi already appears in Mortal Kombat 1’s story campaign, but he is not available as a standard playable Fighter at launch. His upcoming DLC release will give players access to a dedicated moveset rather than the limited abilities seen during story encounters.
The sorcerer made his video game debut in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero in 1997, before becoming playable in Mortal Kombat 4 later that year. His last playable appearance in the fighting series was Mortal Kombat X in 2015.
Quan Chi belongs to the six-Fighter Kombat Pack 1 roster, alongside Ermac, Takeda Takahashi, Peacemaker, Homelander and Omni-Man.
He is expected to be the second post-launch playable Fighter, following the November debut of Omni-Man. NetherRealm recently showcased the Invincible character’s abilities in the Omni-Man gameplay trailer.
Quan Chi’s confirmed place in the Kombat Pack makes the CCXP tease particularly interesting. Players already know he is coming; what remains unanswered is how NetherRealm will translate his necromancy, supernatural attacks and distinctive fighting style into the new combat system.
I’d be particularly interested in seeing whether his portal-based attacks return, given how differently those abilities could interact with Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo-assisted combat.
With Boon’s appearance approaching, CCXP could finally provide that first proper look at the returning sorcerer.
Later Update: NetherRealm revealed the full Quan Chi gameplay trailer at CCXP, confirming his 14 December early-access release, 21 December general availability and the upcoming Khameleon Kameo Fighter.
