GTA San Andreas VR Port

Key Highlights:

  • Meta confirms GTA: San Andreas VR is still in development.
  • No release date announced yet.
  • Follows Rockstar’s previous VR venture with LA Noire: The VR Case Files.

In an encouraging update for Grand Theft Auto fans, Meta has confirmed that the virtual reality port of GTA: San Andreas is still in active development for its Quest VR headset.

This news comes as a relief to many who have been eagerly awaiting updates since the project was first announced back in 2021.

The confirmation came in an unexpected form, a reply to a YouTube comment – but was quickly picked up and shared by GTA Series Videos on X/Twitter. The tweet can be viewed below:

While Meta didn’t provide any specific details or a release date, the simple acknowledgement that they are still working on bringing San Andreas to VR has reinvigorated interest in the project.

This VR adaptation marks Rockstar Games‘ second foray into virtual reality, following 2018’s LA Noire: The VR Case Files.

The choice of San Andreas, one of the most beloved entries in the GTA series, for VR treatment has generated significant excitement among fans.

The announcement has sparked a range of reactions from the Grand Theft Auto community.

Some fans are thrilled at the prospect of experiencing iconic missions like Pier 69 and Wrong Side of the Tracks in immersive VR.

Others are speculating about potential release dates, with some suggesting it could coincide with the game’s 20th anniversary in 2024.

Concerned Fanbase Reassured

However, the long silence since the initial announcement has led to some concerns.

The project was originally targeted for the Meta Quest 2 (formerly Oculus Quest 2), and with Meta now having released the Quest 3, some fans are wondering how the development has adapted to newer hardware.

Despite these questions, the confirmation that development is ongoing is a significant boost for a project that many feared might have been quietly shelved.

It also keeps alive the possibility of more Rockstar titles making the leap to VR in the future, as previously hinted by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company.

The transition of San Andreas to VR is not without its challenges. Adapting a game from 2004 to modern VR standards may require significant rebuilding. This could explain the extended development time and lack of concrete details.

As fans continue to wait for more information, the potential for a fully immersive trip through Los Santos remains an exciting prospect. Whether cruising down Grove Street or engaging in high-speed chases, the VR version of San Andreas promises to offer a fresh perspective on a beloved classic.

While there’s still no word on when we might be able to don the VR headset and step into CJ’s shoes, this update from Meta assures fans that the project is still very much alive.
