- Scribing in The Elder Scrolls Online is becoming a free feature in the base game.
- Players can claim it via the Crown Store starting April 28th.
- A special Golden Pursuit event will accompany the transition.
Bethesda and ZeniMax Online Studios are giving players another reason to celebrate The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). The popular MMORPG is removing the paywall from one of its newest systems, Scribing, and making it available to everyone through the base game later this year.
Previously introduced as part of the Gold Road Chapter, Scribing allowed players to customise their abilities through Grimoires and Scripts, creating tailored skills much like spellcrafting from Oblivion.
Now, thanks to a major update, Scribing will no longer require a separate purchase and will soon be accessible directly from the Crown Store for free.
Scribing Goes Free in ESO
Starting April 28th, Scribing will appear in the Crown Store, not as a purchase, but linked to a special event called the Golden Pursuit. This event will run through mid-July, after which Scribing becomes a permanent free addition to the base game.
Bethesda has advised that players who miss the Golden Pursuit can still claim Scribing afterwards, though there will be a brief window between June and July where access will be temporarily unavailable during backend transitions.
Unlocking Scribing gives players access to new questlines and customisation tools, enhancing their build variety across both PvE and PvP. Customisation will be at the forefront, allowing characters to patch weaknesses or amplify specific playstyles without upsetting the overall balance of gameplay.
Bethesda confirmed that measures are in place to prevent any overpowered combinations, keeping competition fair across all modes.
This move follows the warm reception to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which Bethesda shadow-dropped to great acclaim. It’s a smart strategy, reinforcing goodwill ahead of Seasons of the Worm Cult, part one of which arrives June 2nd.
By making Scribing free, Bethesda is lowering the barrier to entry for returning players and newcomers alike, allowing the broader community to experience the full potential of character customisation.
With Scribing joining subclassing, another feature made free recently after reaching level 50, ESO is positioning itself as one of the most player-friendly MMORPGs currently available.
Between new dungeon content, revamped starting zones, and now free major features like Scribing, The Elder Scrolls Online shows no signs of slowing down as it enters its second decade.
With continued support and major updates still to come, fans can expect an even richer and more accessible adventure across Tamriel in the months ahead.
