Survival in Sons of the Forest isn’t just about facing down cannibals, it’s about preparation and gear. One of the more practical upgrades is the Wetsuit, an outfit that helps you swim faster and endure cold-water environments without draining stamina as quickly.
It’s especially useful for underwater exploration and winter survival. However, reaching it isn’t straightforward, and you’ll need specific tools and a fair amount of caution.
Prerequisites: What You Need Beforehand
You won’t be able to get the Wetsuit without two key items: the Rebreather and the Rope Gun.
The Rebreather is located in a northern cave near the beach spawn, and it’s essential for navigating flooded tunnels. The Rope Gun, found in a western inland cave, lets you use ziplines to reach otherwise inaccessible cave zones. Both caves are populated by aggressive mutants, so come prepared.
Before heading out, gather food, meds, and a ranged weapon like the Pistol or Crafted Bow.
A save point just outside each cave – using a tarp and stick is highly recommended, as death without a save could send you back significantly.
If possible, pick up the Flashlight along the way to improve visibility in tight spaces.
How to Reach the Wetsuit in SOTF
With both tools in your inventory, head toward the mountain region on the island’s west side.
Just south of the GPS marker where the Flashlight is found, look for a small pond marked by three impaled soldiers. This gruesome landmark signals the correct cave entrance.
Inside the cave, use the Rope Gun at the zipline point to descend to the lower level. You’ll soon reach a pool of water, equip the Rebreather and an Air Tank before diving. This is where the Rebreather is critical, not just for breathing, but also as your only light source in the pitch-black tunnel.
Swim downward into the submerged passage that leads to a second cavern. There is only one way to go, so there’s no chance of getting lost underwater. Once surfaced, watch for roaming mutants. Near the rocks on the right-hand side of the chamber, the Wetsuit can be found laid out beside an Air Tank and Pistol Ammo.
Here’s a breakdown of the Wetsuit location and context:
| Item | Location Context | Additional Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wetsuit | West-side cave, post-zipline dive | Found on rock near supplies |
| Air Tank | Same room as Wetsuit | Essential for extended diving |
| Pistol Ammo | Next to the Wetsuit in the same chamber | Stock up before engaging more threats |
To equip the Wetsuit, open your inventory and select it from the bottom-right section.
Tips and What Comes After
The cave containing the Wetsuit also serves as a route toward the mid-game Shovel, so the effort is doubly worthwhile.
Keep in mind that once equipped, the Wetsuit will stay on even when you’re not in water unless manually removed, which could reduce armour use in combat situations.
Clear the room of threats before looting to avoid being killed mid-animation.
With the Wetsuit now in your loadout, underwater areas become less of a threat and more of an opportunity.
It’s a subtle but important upgrade, especially when survival depends on every second spent in the cold.
