Blizzard has opened the doors early for Overwatch 2’s newest support hero, Wuyang, with a special trial running from August 14th at 10 AM PT until August 19th at 10 AM PT.
Unlike the standard four-day hero trial, Wuyang will be available for a full five days – giving players 120 hours to experiment before his official debut in Season 18 on August 26th.
During this trial, Wuyang is playable only in Quick Play and Stadium modes, with progress toward his badges, stats, and Competitive Play locked until his full release. While Blizzard describes this as an opportunity for players to “get to know” the hero, from my experience it’s effectively a large-scale stress test, a chance for the devs to catch bugs, tweak numbers, and adjust balance before he’s added to the competitive roster.
You can watch the gameplay trailer showcasing the new hero above.
A Flexible Support With Curved Damage Potential
Wuyang’s primary weapon, the Xuanwu Staff, fires controllable water orbs that can either be tapped for modest splash damage or charged for a devastating 100-damage explosion.
What makes him stand out in Overwatch 2 is the ability to guide charged orbs for up to 2.5 seconds, letting skilled players curve shots around corners or into clustered enemies.
In my testing, this is where Wuyang rewards creativity – think Zarya Graviton combos or punishing grouped opponents through line-of-sight cover. His secondary fire, Restorative Stream, places a passive heal-over-time on an ally (25 HP/sec) that can be amped to 75 HP/sec with an active beam. The burst heal drains an energy meter in about three seconds, making resource management critical.
One key advantage: the passive link has generous line-of-sight forgiveness, letting you maintain healing through short cover breaks, useful for tracking flankers without constant repositioning.
Abilities That Blend Mobility and Utility
Rushing Torrent is a mobility skill that boosts movement speed by 50% and increases jump height for four seconds. In practice, it’s great for quick rotations or escaping dives, and with his “Overflow” perk, it also refills ammo and healing energy on activation, a small but impactful sustain loop.
Guardian Wave is a hybrid tool: hitting allies heals them and grants a temporary healing buff, while striking enemies knocks them back and deals scaling damage.
At close range, the knockback can interrupt key ultimates or stall aggressive pushes. Perk builds like “Ebb and Flow” make this even more versatile by sending the wave back to its origin point for double utility.
Tidal Blast – More Than Just a Panic Button
His ultimate, Tidal Blast, can be cast on himself or an ally, granting 400 overhealth, a speed boost, and ending in a large AoE heal/damage knockdown. The CC potential is significant – 1.5 seconds of knockdown in a 7.5m radius can swing fights, but the real depth comes from creative combos. I’ve already seen it used with Tracer blinks for instant disruption, Junker Queen’s Rampage for chained crowd control, and even attached to D.Va’s Self-Destruct for a moving AoE lockdown.
There are nuances too: invulnerability abilities can nullify the explosion if mistimed, so Mei, Moira, and Doomfist players will need to coordinate carefully. Reaper, interestingly, can carry it through Wraith Form without issue.
Looking Ahead to Season 18
Wuyang joins Overwatch 2’s roster officially on August 26, alongside a competitive rank reset, perk system overhaul, the new Payload Race Stadium mode, and Sojourn’s Mythic skin. Blizzard will be at Gamescom from August 20–24, where more details on these features are expected.
If this extended trial is anything to go by, Wuyang is shaping up to be one of the most flexible support heroes in the game’s history, with a skill ceiling high enough to make him a staple in coordinated play, and enough raw utility to disrupt both backlines and frontlines.
For players who master his curved orbs and combo potential, this weekend is the perfect time to start sharpening those skills before the ranked meta catches on.
